Justice for Officer Sutton

Anonymous
Why is the officer responsible for this guy’s inability to drive, and wear a helmet? He violated a department policy, not the law. At this point DC is governed by radical mob rule, and the citizens of DC that voted for this deserve every carjacking that comes their way.

A jury of his peers found him guilty.

DC juries play a role in the status quo.

He’s still awaiting sentencing. Is there a minimum? I hope he sues the city into federalization

This was a politically motivated prosecution. Now if only we could prosecute the criminals with the same fervor.

I’m sorry this young man crashed himself and died. He was also a known gang member and armed at the time.

Officer should have been charged with obstruction of justice and fired, but not charged with manslaughter.

This is a big part of why officers are retiring early, or afraid to chase criminals. Honestly do any of you know anyone that would willingly be a police officer in DC? The current officers are despairing over finding anyone to replace them. This is not going to lead to better policing. It’s going to lead to only the dregs that can’t find other employment joining the force.

Are you saying that police officers are incapable of following policy? That seems like a problem.

The officer is not responsible for the other person's behavior. The officer is responsible for his own behavior.

He violated a department policy — he didn’t violate a single law that falls under murder or even manslaughter. You people are looney toons, and I honestly hope that you get carjacked and the police don’t show up because you 100% deserve for that to happen.

“ At the request of federal prosecutors, the court blocked the jury from hearing about Hylton’s membership in the Kennedy Street crew, which was under Justice Department investigation at the time and whose other members would later be indicted for murder, drug trafficking, and racketeering. The jury also never heard that Hylton was wearing an ankle monitor for a violent assault in Montgomery County, Maryland, and had thousands of dollars in cash strapped to his body”

DC’s no-chase policy is perplexing. I don’t want high speech chases in my neighborhood if unneeded, but they are supposed to just let criminals… run away?

What can be done to save this man? Has anyone organized? Is there somewhere that I can donate to?

Thanks in advance.

I hope he appeals and wins.
I don't know why anyone would be a police officer in the district with stories like this and laws that tie the hands of officers.
TBH - I don't know how anyone even LIVES in the district with some of their crazy ass laws that seem to favor the criminals over the victims.

The guy fleeing the officer was a criminal. A criminal. And, the officer was prevented from mounting a full defense.

Does that excuse the police officers' actions? I don't think so, and the jury also didn't think so. Apparently I have higher expectations of our police officers than you do.

Oh, please. From the article linked:

But Sutton, a 13-year police veteran, did not strike, shoot, harm, or even touch Hylton. Hylton died after exiting a blind alley on a motorized scooter and being struck by a passing civilian vehicle. He had multiple drugs in his system. He ran through stop signs and red lights in the minutes before he drove into oncoming traffic. Sutton followed Hylton at a moderate speed, averaging 30 miles per hour.

Seems to me as if this officer was simply doing his job. No high speed chase.
The guy killed himself.

No, the office was not simply doing his job, unless his job includes pursuit in violation of policy, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Here are some more articles for you to read:

As the PP said: he has had justice. He was charged, there was a trial, a jury found him guilty.

He was doing his job. He was trying to stop Karon Hylton, a known member of a violent drug gang, from shooting a rival and injuring bystanders.

He was doing his job by engaging in conspiracy and obstruction of justice? Wow, you have a low opinion of police.

No, they are supposed to have other ways of tracking them that don't involve high-speed chases in a city.
