+1. It’s much nicer and less crowded. There are plenty of “regular” families there, not all super wealthy.

+2
We've had four kids at Langley. Each has wildly different interests and all have found "their people" - nice kids with good hearts. Great school that I highly recommend.

+3. And we aren’t wealthy (we live in a tiny house we bought after the housing crash).

We looked in both areas and bought in the McLean district. It’s a great school.

Pick th3 house you like and has the best commutes. Any perceived differences are less than the value of being 10 minutes closer to work.

Langley because the facility is the newest

In case you haven’t noticed, OP, Langley tends to be more hyper-competitive.

If I had to do it over, I would personally not buy in either due to the competitive nature of the parents at both schools. The pressure is not good for teens mental health.

Agree! It's easy to get pulled in by the idea that these are the "best schools!!" but then your kids there are competing against kids from much easier high schools for the same spots at UVA, Tech, Mason, etc.... [Parent of McLean kid and teacher at South Lakes]

Not OP but looking for a house in 900-950k range. I'm guessing we are SOL wrt to these schools (as the vast majority are). What are the next best options?

We kept our kids grounded, and it felt like just the right amount of pressure: their peers took academics seriously and challenged each other, but it wasn't over the top. They each took AP courses that interested them, but didn't overload just to have an all-AP transcript.

The building isn't great, but I can't say enough good things about the current administration (principal has been there since 2012), most of the teachers, and the kids. Unfortunately, there's a lot of teacher turnover in FCPS right now and it's not unique to McLean.

I second this.

Maybe west Springfield? We are in the Marshall district, which we intentially chose over McLean and Langley, but I don't think you'll be able to find anything here in that price range.

Marshall is your next best option for the area.

Probably Chantilly, Fairfax, or West Springfield.

Personally would avoid Marshall although you can find a house for $950K in some neighborhoods there. It’s IB, which most people with a choice between IB and AP avoid.

We will be moving from DCPS due to safety concerns at one of the top NW elementary schools which we have loved, but it’s no longer tenable to stay in DC.

NP. So sorry to hear this. Friends of mine are leaving DC for this reason. What has been going on for y'all?

Bullying with knives.
