McLean or Langley high school?

DP, but have the same question -- what is the behavior like at the middle school level? Do kids pay attention in class, or do teachers have to constantly redirect students?

I have a child at Cooper middle. It seems mixed. Some kids are very studious. Others cause disruptions and get into fights. Overall my DC does not complain about behavior problems.

Maybe west Springfield? We are in the Marshall district, which we intentially chose over McLean and Langley, but I don't think you'll be able to find anything here in that price range.

Lake Braddock or Robinson pyramids too have houses in that range. Both good schools.

NP. I don't think absolute comparisons (one school is "better" than another) are very helpful.

Here are some reasons why someone might prefer McLean to Langley (just my two cents):

* There is more racial and economic diversity.
* The MHS neighborhoods generally are closer to Tysons, DC, and Metro than LHS neighborhoods.
* The boundaries generally are more compact, so it's easier for kids to hang out together (even the two MHS attendance islands are fairly close to the school).
* There are three roads leading to the school (Davidson, Westmoreland, and Sea Cliff) whereas Langley is only accessible via Georgetown Pike.
* McLean offers some foreign languages (ASL, German) that aren't available or are being phased out at Langley.
* The marching band, rowing, Scholastic Bowl, and student publications (newspaper, yearbook) programs are stronger.
* The administration is more experienced.
* Fewer things happen at McLean that local community members attack publicly (whereas in the Langley pyramid, locals have complained in recent years about late notification of students' NMSF commended status, a "banned books" display in the Langley library, signs at Langley student protests, and a college prep program at Cooper that some locals claimed discriminated against White/Asian kids).
* The middle school feeder (Longfellow) tends to do better in various academic competitions (MathCounts, Science Olympiad, TJ admissions) than the middle school feeder for Langley (Cooper).

There are also reasons why someone might prefer Langley to McLean:

* The building has been renovated more recently and the school is less crowded, whereas McLean has not been renovated for decades and remains overcrowded.
* It has a bigger parking lot so it's easier to find parking.
* Langley offers some foreign languages (Japanese, Russian) that aren't available at McLean.
* The Model U.N. and choral programs are stronger.
* Langley can spend more of its budget on advanced academics and less of its budget on ESOL resources.
* The golf team is better, and more parents can spend money to advance their kids' other athletic skills privately.
* The community as a whole is more conservative (a benefit if you think FCPS and FCPS schools are too liberal).
* Unless FCPS redistricts, Langley will be affected less by the continued growth in the Tysons area.
