Willie Sutton said he robbed banks because that's where the money is. Metro is deploying the new fare gates initially in certain areas because that's where the most fare jumpers are. |

I just got back from Paris. They have gates like this in the metro there and I saw lots of people just pushing through them without paying.
They do have random ticket checks every so often, carried out by three or four gendarmes blocking a passageway, so maybe that’s something we could try here. |
Reported fare jumpers. |
Like Bethesda?! Those poor millionaires. |
I have been suggesting random blockades and road blocks to catch criminals in the streets for months now. Fine with it in metro! |
| New turnstiles have dramatically reduced fare avoidance at Union Station. An unexpected side benefit has been a parallel reduction in the opacity of the cloud of pot smoke that hovers over the station entrance. Metro should roll these out system-wide. |
It's not a crime to evade the fare. It's against the law, but it's not a crime. Just like it's against the law to drive 1 mph faster than the speed limit, but it's not a crime. |
Bethesda, Courthouse, Vienna . . . ? |
Speeding is usually a civil penalty. However, some speeding is criminal. School zones, over certain speeds, etc. |
Obviously they are sending a message that jumpers are not welcome in wealthy areas. Bethesda likes to protest things and you have a few hours this morning. Have at it. |
| Charging fares for public transit is stupid. |
A HUGE chunk of the fare jumpers are actually eligible for metro cards. They simply don't apply or pick them up. This impacts metros "credit" as they cannot account for student users. Metro almost needs to come up with an agreement with DCPS and simply assign EVERY student a monthly metro card free on their school ID/DC ONE. Just account for EVERY student using WMATA. |
Bethesda? |

The new doors are a joke. It is easier now to avoid pay metro. Now you only need to push the door. Easier than jumping.
"Video shows fare evaders pushing through Metro gates designed to stop people from fare hopping" https://youtu.be/WQmFOUMZ-kw?si=r5LhtPh0nnKi-FSJ Unbelievable!! |
This. Most of the fare jumpers I see look like students. Just hand out the damn cards to every DCPS student. Also, another easy fix is just having a Metro employee or police officer standing next to the fare gates. Not in the booth, but right next to the gates. There are studies showing that this cuts fare jumping significantly. |
