OMG, how devastating. I just cannot imagine that loss for what is essentially a kitten (I know not actually, but still so young).

I'm sorry, OP. Hugs to you. Losing a pet is hard.

He always got a clean bill of heath at the vet, but an undetected genetic condition is totally possible. I also have his brother from the same litter so I hope he doesn't have the same issue.

Thank you all for the kind words. My son who is special needs and an only child is absolutely devastated. That was his best buddy.

I'm sorry. Grief is a difficult, painful thing to experience. Take it easy this week and when/if you're ready, it might be good to take your son to do something in the cat's honor like place a stone in your garden, donate cat toys to a shelter or make a remembrance area in your home with a photo and something the cat liked.

Here is a link with some information about heart disease in cats:
https://www.pethealthnetwork.com/cat-health/cat-diseases-conditions-a-z/heart-disease-most-common-cause-sudden-death-cats

It is possible to get a necropsy but they are quite expensive.

The very likely cause was sudden cardiac arrest and the death would have been quick and painless for your kitty, if that helps.

I'm so sorry for you loss. You should expect some altered behavior in the litter mate as cats and dogs do experience loss and grief.

I’m really sorry. Cats hide any health issues. That’s young, but it happens . I had cats die at 9, 11, 12. The 11 year old was sudden. I don’t think I can get a pet again because the grief is horrible . Maybe if I move. I’m afraid pesticides may be making them ill. The 9 and 12 year olds died from cancer and I’m told that’s rare in cats. The 11 year old was probably a heart attack . I miss them all so much

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP. We adopted two kittens from the same litter. One of them had a genetic condition that came out of nowhere when she was 2, and the vet couldn't save her. Her sister is still with us and her same old wonderful self at 17.5 years old.

I doubt your cat got into anything poisonous. It sounds like a cardiac or other underlying health issue to me. Hugs to you and your family.

Oh OP, I'm so sorry. I have a 3 year old kitty too, and I can't imagine suddenly losing her. It must be so baffling and confusing. Thank you for providing a good home to you guy during the time he was yours.

Everything good with your living situation? Not exactly a canary but I would crack a window open and make sure I have fresh air make sure your hvac isn’t obstructed. Where was he sleeping?

I’m so sorry, OP! Cats are so hard because they hide symptoms of issues really well.

I'm so sorry. Wishing you and your family comfort. I still miss my beloved cat 4 years after her death.

OP, my heart goes out to you and your family. A sudden loss is so confusing.

As another PP said, cats are master at hiding illness, if there was any. I have know cats that passed suddenly. It’s hard to comprehend.

Lots of people are holding you in their hearts.

Agree with the point about cats hiding illness. Something similar happened to a beloved family cat when I was little - fine one day and then the next day she passed away. It’s devastating. I’m so, so sorry for your loss.
