Prodigy is crap. Our school uses Reflex Math and it helped our kids so much that we bought it for them to use over the summer. |
My kids loathed it too. Good concept, terrible program. So many interface errors that you can't work around and send you back to the beginning when you were already bored. |
No the kids hate it too. I stopped using ST Math in 2021 after so many kids complained. The parents did too. Every year I have kids tell me they are thankful I don’t make them do STMath. |
My kids school sent home that there was a chance to win a visit from Jiji the Penguin. I asked my kid about it and he replied “Why would I want to see that stupid penguin?” He is in 6th grade and is not a fan of ST Math. I have no clue why it is being used in the Advanced Math class but we all groan when ST Math is assigned for homework. |
We absolutely did not make dc do SlT math homework. It seemed like an utter waste of time. I would have happily had him complete actual worksheets or something from the teacher. |
OP here. It seems that one could ask the teacher to assign more advanced material in ST Math and they might be amenable. Anyone do that successfully? The only thing I'm unsure of is if there's a way to get around having to do it completely sequentially.
Another thing people mentioned is the requirement to 100% correct in order to move on. So it might be that by avoiding silly mistakes then DC could proceed a tiny bit faster? I noticed yesterday DC was doing some task and didn't totally comprehend what it was asking for at first (where are the damn instructions?) and made some mistakes because DC assumed the task was asking for something more sophisticated. ![]() |
ST Math is a horrible program. There is an absolutely zero support, directions are minimal with no examples, and the time spent waiting for the animation is a waste of time. With that being said, there are some real opportunities here to make a lot of money. I’m considering making a site that provides visual examples to assist students and parents. For a small fee of course. ST Math could do way better by this program and it’s evident somebody is definitely getting some kickback for requiring districts to push this on our student's. |
Did you post this from Gatehouse. The kids haaaaaaaaate it. Someone posted on here once that a kid knocked on her door on Halloween dressed as JiJi with a knife stuck in his head. |
Tell your kid to just not to do it. Get them a real workbook and they can do a page in that instead. |
Khan Academy already exists |
I think they mean a site to assist parents/kids in getting through ST Math. Thing is, this thing is apparently somewhat customizable. The teacher can set the starting level, control how many attempts kids get before they have to start over, etc. but a lot of them don't bother, making it even worse than it already is. |
I'd be highly surprised if there were meaningful negative consequences to not doing it, especially if the teacher already knows the kid knows the material. "Mandatory" often means "admin said it's mandatory but teachers don't really care". |
Everything in fcps ES is optional, lol. You just don't do it. |
+1 This was DC’s math homework one year. It was a horrific waste of time. We just did not do it. At all. Never heard a peep from the teacher. |
My older kids say they don't know a single kid at school who likes it. 2nd grader doesn't mind it, but she'll do the most boring thing possible as long as it's on a screen (we're Luddites at home). |
