They were my introduction to bagels when we moved to the US as a teen. That's the suze bagel I can eat! I've never been able to finish those giant bagels. |
| Lender’s Bagels - great childhood memory! |
| Where can I find them? Giant? Are they only in the freezer section? I’d just like to try them. |
Yes, most mainstream grocery stores in freezer section. |
When do you think the recipe changed? A lot of food was reformulated to eliminate trans fats in the last 20 years or so. The trend in corporate America is actually to reduce sugar instead of increase it. Or substitute it with new products like stevia. Campbell's has tried to reduce salt in its mainstream soups but that's not what customers want so they've had to undo the recipe adjustments before. So if it got changed, they were probably reformulating to make it healthier. Perhaps they lowered the salt without changing the amount of sugar. |
I don’t think they added any more sugar. But they did take out high fructose corn syrup as the sweetener. As a packaged, preserved bagel, I imagine they always had a higher amount of sugar than something homemade I found this: https://www.bakingbusiness.com/articles/56244-lenders-relaunches-with-new-recipes-packaging |

I have noticed it too! Sometimes I buy them they are like they use to be. Just bought more because I thought they were doing them the way they use to be. Surprise they where the awful new ones!!
May just switch brands. I am so tired of it |
+1 !! |

OP today's WaPo has a bagel review.
The best bagels in D.C.? We tried 9 shops and found a clear winner. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/interactive/2024/best-bagels-dc/?itid=hp_latest-from-the-post_p003_f003 |
It’s pay-walled. Who won? |
Think about getting a subscription. Digital subscriptions are very reasonable. 1. Pearl’s Bagels 1017 Seventh St. NW. pearlsbagels.com. Overall score: 86/120 This mom-and-pop husband-and-wife shop in Shaw ran away with the competition in every way conceivable. It got the highest overall score, got the highest score for plain bagels (41 out of 60) and everything bagels (45), and secured the only perfect score (10) from any judge. Fans trumpeted its texture (“nice squish; even baking”), appearance (“nice browning”) and chew (“a bit of crackle”), and the criticism was muted (“not anything special”). Yay: “Perfect seasoning blend. Excellent.” Nay: “Outside lacks blistering. That’s so indicative of a truly good bagel.” OMG: “Fabulous chew. I could eat a lot of these.” |
| I need an onion one now....yummm......with salted cream butter..... |
| lol this is so funny OP they have not changed the recipe. They were always just meh. Great for school lunches and pizza bagels but as bagels go lol just no |
