Well there's always been the illegal Irish. Do you care about them? |
DP I have a relative who works in a different city at an Irish pub who has told me about all the illegal Irish there. Also, here ya go: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/addr...-officials-1.4786158 |
No, that’s from his social media post overnight. Did he say “illegal immigrant” in the speech or just “immigrants”? |
You are correct OP
December 17, 2023 HEATHER COX RICHARDSON (US historian) It seems that former president Donald Trump is aligning his supporters with a global far-right movement to destroy democracy. On Saturday, in Durham, New Hampshire, Trump echoed Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s attacks on immigrants, saying they are “poisoning the blood of our country”—although two of his three wives were immigrants—and quoted Russian president Vladimir Putin’s attacks on American democracy. Trump went on to praise North Korean autocratic leader Kim Jong Un and align himself with Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, the darling of the American right wing, who has destroyed Hungary’s democracy and replaced it with a dictatorship. Trump called Orbán “the man who can save the Western world.” Dr. Sarah Riccardi-Swartz, a professor of religion and anthropology at Northeastern University, explained in The Conversation what Trump is talking about. Autocrats like Orbán and Putin—and budding autocrats like Trump—are building a global movement by fighting back against the expansion of rights to women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ people. Russian leaders have been cracking down on LGBTQ+ rights for a decade with the help of the Russian Orthodox Church, claiming that they are protecting “traditional values.” This vision of heteronormativity rewrites the real history of human sexuality, but it is powerful in this moment. Orbán insists that immigrants ruin the purity of a country, and has undermined women’s rights. Riccardi-Swartz explains that this rhetoric appeals to those in far-right movements around the world. In the United States, “family values” became tied to patriotism after World War II, when Chinese and Soviet communists appeared to be erasing traditional gender roles. Those people defined as anti-family—LGBTQ+ people and women who challenged patriarchy—seemed to be undermining society. Now, as dictators like Putin and Orbán promise to take away LGBTQ+ rights, hurt immigrants, and return power to white men, they seem to many to be protecting traditional society. In the United States, that undercurrent has created a movement of people who are willing to overthrow democracy if it means reinforcing their traditional vision. Christian nationalists believe that the secular values of democracy are destroying Christianity and traditional values. They want to get rid of LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, immigration, and the public schools they believe teach such values. And if that means handing power to a dictator who promises to restore their vision of a traditional society, they’re in. It is an astonishing rejection of everything the United States has always stood for. The White House today responded to Trump’s speech. White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said: “Echoing the grotesque rhetoric of fascists and violent white supremacists and threatening to oppress those who disagree with the government are dangerous attacks on the dignity and rights of all Americans, on our democracy, and on public safety…. It’s the opposite of everything we stand for as Americans.” — Notes: https://www.washingtonpost.com/elections/2023...ban-poisoning-blood/ https://talkingpointsmemo.com/cafe/russia-ram...l-far-right-audience https://talkingpointsmemo.com/cafe/what-mike-...s-about-his-politics https://www.politico.com/news/2023/12/16/bide...immigration-00132161 https://theconversation.com/as-russia-ramps-u...t-fans-abroad-219102 |
There are so many responses to this - that Trump talks about illegal immigration as a cover for his animosity towards minorities, that it calls to mind him calling white supremacists (one of whom murdered a woman) very fine people, that anti-immigrant groups are continuing to work against birthright citizenship, and on and on. But that's all deflection, as is the quibbling over legal vs. illegal immigrants - the intent of the statement is to avow that American blood is being poisoned by "the other." What makes a legal Mexican immigrant's blood different than an illegal one? Do you think Trump or his followers actually care? The fact that you're making the distinction means you either are egging on the result or are already being hoodwinked by the thin cover that Trump is employing. So you ought to either eff off or wake up. |

It's lazy, click bait reporting. His speech was an hour and a half (https://www.c-span.org/video/?532231-1/presid...olds-rally-durham-nh) and he referenced illegal immigration multiple times throughout his speech using phrases such as these quote such as: the hoards of people charging across our border deporting gang members and terrorists the invasion on the border this about people coming into our country who are going to be a disaster because they come from jails, mental institutions they are coming in unchecked and unvetted he read a poem about a women taking in a weak and ill snake who then recovers and bites and kills the woman and asks the crowd if that sound familiar he will stop the invasion of the southern border will begin the largest deportation order in history he will restore the travel ban from terrorist countries implement ideological screening for illegal immigrants if you hate America and want to abolish Israel then we don't want you I was curious because I can't stand Trump and voted for Biden and anytime Trump has spoken since he left the White House I change the channel because I hope never to hear him. However, I was curiously how he was fairing cognitively, so I listened to his speech (speeded at up at 2x because who can stand listening to him that long). He promises everything to get votes and brings up inflammatory topics to appeal to the crowd. Trump was easily able to give a long speech that appeals to the masses. He of course boasts how he is going to reduce crime, stop inflation, stop the millions entering on the southern border, everyone in America will be better off, clean up cities and restore them, protect police, prevent International conflicts (he claims Ukraine and Israel's October 7th attack), etc. No specifics on how he is going to accomplish this but these will appeal to voters. I am really getting worried about Trump getting re-elected. I can't picture Biden being able to debate Trump. I have doubts that Biden can speak for a prolonged period of time and certainly not during a debate. I am annoyed the Democrats aren't coming up with Plan B (to protect Plan B!) |
Lots of non Latino immigrants without papers. They overstay their visas |
Not remotely comparable. Trump is talking about "blood" as a synonym of societal culture and strength. Hitler is talking about "race" in a broad enough sense to include any form of heritage. By Hitler standards almost the entire Trump family is inferior mixed blood, including Trump's wife, four of his five children and all of his grandchildren. His entire family is part Slavic or part Jewish and in Hitler's mind are inferior by blood. |
This is the biggest fear in my house if Trump gets re-elected. My DH was naturalized in the 1990s. Trump and Trump supporters are horrifying. |
Trump is unhinged. He isn’t going to debate anyone because he is decompensating before our very eyes. |
Trump has been ok with hypocrisy and special privileges for his friends and family since forever. He doesn’t care that his family is mostly immigrants; he’s unhinged and really doesn’t like brown people and Muslims. He barely tolerates Jews, so long as they are making or counting his money. Folks need to wake the f#ck up. |
+1 The people grasping the enormity of this are correct. This is disgusting. His supporters are disgusting. |
And, you are falling for the fear mongering by the left. |
