AP Precalc

Should take honors.

Teacher is recommending it since kid is doing very well in Algebra 2 and has high MAP-M scores. Thinking might as well and then move into Calc BC.

This was us last year. I asked the dept head for input and he said the same thing. But DS thinks the honors class sounds harder and wishes he’d taken that instead of AP.

Did they make it sounds like the AP pre calc was the harder class? I feel like that is what my son's school is doing but sounds like they are messing it up.

I guess so? Based on info from posters here last year, I called and expressed concern about AP being less demanding than Honors. School told me that’s not correct and any strong math student should take AP. DS says he has a lot of seniors in his AP class and it’s moving more slowly than the Honors class. BUT it’s also possible it’s just moving differently and DS an interprets that to be slower because he hasn’t seen yet in his class what the other class is doing. Students also don’t love the Honors teacher, which may make that one seem harder. So hard to know what’s up other than DS isn’t finding the AP all that difficult (also maybe DS is simply good in math).

How does MCPS not know which is the harder class. Ridiculous.

Thanks for the link to old thread. Why would AP Pre-Calc be easier than Honors?

Because it was created to help kids who otherwise wouldn't take calc to get into that track. It's not a college-level course. Honors precalc is for kids who were always going to calc. AP is therefore less rigorous.

Here one take on it: https://saratogafalcon.org/content/precalculus-honors-classes-should-not-transform-curriculum-to-conform-to-ap-precalculus/

That's simply not true.

At our school AP PreCalc is the prereq for AP Calc AB and BC.

That is exactly why it was created.

What they should do is offer AP PreCalc for the non-STEM students, and AP PreCalc Honors for the Calculus track students with FOMO.

They don’t offer ap precal at our school.

It's being piloted this year and is expanding next year (and thereafter).

Our school is not listing it for next year.

Specifically at QO, does anyone know which will be the more challenging class next year Honors or AP?

No idea but I would go with ap if we had the choice but honors pre-cal is really hard.

+1 for WJ. I’m guessing the teachers know the current Honors Pre Calc is the more rigorous course. For schools needing to up their AP numbers, perhaps they’re more interested in offering AP Pre Calc? We’ll see how this shakes out at the different schools.

I think they don’t have enough qualified teachers. Our school stops at calculus so kids who need more junior and senior year have to go to MC.

What does that have to do with Honors vs AP Pre Calc?
