Is soup a meal?

Anonymous
This is such a long-running argument in my house that my kids made up a song about it.

Lunch, yes.

Dinner, not on its own, but it can be part of a good meal with some appetizers, hearty salad, good bread, cheese plate, etc.

Yes.

+1. Especially the soups described. A bowl of minestrone, piece of bread, and a green salad is probably...350 calories?? And has little to no protein. In the US, where dinner is usually the most substantial meal, this would not be enough and I don't like guests to feel deprived, so solid no for me. I'm a small person with a small appetite so maybe for me, but not the 6'4 men in my family. It's an appetizer.

I saw the thread title and I thought about that Seinfeld episode. Then started reading responses and I was thinking "isn't anybody going to bring up that Seinfeld episode"????
And then, finally, there you were!
Anonymous
IMO, no, but people differ on this point.

Does anyone under age 40 relate to Seinfeld? I feel so old sometimes.

Did he crumble any crackers in it?

Have you ever been to Asia? What kind of question is this?
Anonymous
For me yes, but I would not serve to guests unless I know they felt the same.
Anonymous
It’s …questionable. See the Seinfeld episode

If this is the hill you want to die on, there are reasonable grounds. But I feel like there is a just as reasonable counter-argument.

I make Italian wedding soup as well as Tortilla soup and they are complete protein rich meals in my house (no growing boys).

This is my view too. Fine for immediate family only.
