Yes or no? Not talking about chili or stew, but say, minestrone, Italian wedding, chicken tortilla… if served with a green salad and bread. Is this enough for a dinner meal? (Context: trying to meal plan for family houseguests). DH thinks soup is an appetizer or first course, I think it’s dinner. What say DCUM?
I have made soup that can be a meal. But for the soups you mention, I'd serve it with a side like grilled cheese, or with something more substantial on the salad. So, minestrone or Italian Wedding with a Italian chopped salad with protein and cheese, or a caesar salad with chicken, for example.
We regularly have soup as a meal with some crusty bread and a amall salad. So good.
It’s a meal for me but not for guests, even family.
Yes! Serve it with big hunks of good crusty country bread and pass around a bowl of grated parm to add on top
Yep.
Absolutely it is, in our family. DH, me, two kids. We'll all happily eat soup, salad and bread for lunch or dinner.
For me and the kids on a weeknight, sure, but for adult guests, no.
It's a meal if you want it to be.
It’s a starter. It needs something else served with it to complete the meal.
Most people want protein in a meal.
I put extra chunks of meat to make it more substantial, like extra Italian sausage or chicken. I recently made a Moroccan Lentil Stew with chicken and orzo and had a salad and bread and everyone was full afterwards.
It has lentils in it which is a source of protein. It’s closer to chili than to the clear soups Op is asking about like minestrone. |
Yes! Especially if it has pasta, rice or orzo and protein, legumes or beans in it, not talking about a bowl of broth. It needs bread or maybe crackers, and maybe a green salad too. But I think it's enough by itself.
Depends: Were you given an Armani suit?
