I got asked if I was a senior. AGAIN.

Rock it, OP. Invest your discounts and when you actually are a senior, they'll be worth $$$$!

Most people don't lie about their age to save a few bucks.

I knew a woman who when she was younger was really into getting a tan, only want to date "bronze" guys, laid in the sun for hours oiled up with Hawaiian Tropic, etc.
She's in her late 40' but looks like in late 60s with leather like skin.

No, I've never worn makeup. Maybe this is the problem?

Yes, at your age you need a little something to give your face some color and life and dimension. -NP

+1 There's a reason people say "you're too young to need make-up."

I’m 46 and I got carded at the self checkout at giant last week buying cough medicine. I was not amused.

But I would be even less amused by someone offering me a senior discount. I’m sorry, OP. I’m sure you don’t look like a senior.

Wow, this thread didn’t go the way I thought it was going to. I thought you were going to be saying how pleased you were that people thought you might be a senior in high school.

I’m sorry this happened to you. 🙁 I don’t think cashiers should be offering senior discounts to anyone who doesn’t ask for one or isn’t obviously old enough to qualify, but I can see how it’s ingrained in the cashier at the hair salon to ask about discounts on senior day because so many people probably take advantage of the promotion.

Just out of curiosity, were these shops located near any age restricted community? Maybe this is something that comes up lots of times per day with their local customer base?

AARP discounts start at 50 which is only 4 years away for you. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that someone thought you were 4 years older than you are.

Given the circumstances, do you really have to ask?

Anonymous wrote:I'm 46. This ... is the second time in a year that this has happened. First time at a hair salon where apparently they have a discount for seniors on the day of the week I was there. Yesterday it happened again. I was checking out at a store and the cashier asked if I was a senior. I said yes to see what happened - I got 10% off each item.

Maybe I DO look a decade older than I am? I don't walk with a limp or a cane or anything. A week ago I got my hair dyed so it's a chestnut brown without any gray, parted in the middle just past my shoulders - it's not like an old lady pouf hairdo. I was wearing jeans from Nordstrom Rack and a solid-colored v-neck t-shirt with sneakers. I'm not gaunt or anything. I'm not wrinkly. I've never smoked, tanned and on an average day drink about two liters of water.

If it had just been that one guy I'd chalk it up to him just being horrible at guessing people's ages. Now it's a second person. So maybe ... could I look 55 even though I'm 46? (And yes, I know it's 62 or 65, but for discounts in restaurants it's often 55 so I'm guessing both people meant they thought I might be that age because surely there's no way I look 65, right?)

I mean, you ARE old AF and more than halfway to dead in all likelihood.

Harris Teeter was giving me a senior discount without asking when I was in my 30s.

No, at your age you don’t need to start wearing makeup. I think this was just bad luck. Essentially a one off that happened twice.

Anyone who is under 25 thinks anyone over 49 is ancient. Welcome to our world.

I’m going to get a fake ID and save a few bucks. 10% on my groceries? Yes, please!

No, I was not in Florida or Arizona. I am in a major metro city.

Do you have a frumpy body or dress yourself in a frumpy way, OP? I feel like that really ages women once they're over 40. Being fit with some muscle tone gives the body a more youthful shape and affects how you carry yourself. In terms of dressing yourself, I'm not saying dress like a 20 year old, but paying some attention to trends will at least make you not look older than you are.

OP at some point very soon you *will* be a senior. Is that really so bad? If these comments are the only evidence that something is wrong, then nothing is wrong.

If you are white- you need make up. Should be wearing it.
