How do we get the USAO to do their jobs and put career criminals in prison?

Nominated by the President, recommended by the DC Judicial Commission which is effectively the Mayor and Council.

Woke administration with equity priorities nominates woke AG to implement progressive justice reform and lower incarceration rates and crime skyrockets. Film at 11.

The AG does not have authority over serious crimes. It’s a vestige of DC’s lack of statehood and full home rule that we don’t control the prosecution of serious felonies.

I’d love to see a post from someone who works at the USAO. Graves is not a screaming liberal, at least from his bio. I guess I overlapped with him at law school but don’t remember him at all.
I agree many of the judges are PDS alums, but not all.

Three armed robberies today in Adams Morgan, daytime on a Sunday afternoon. Delete all financial apps from your phone and don’t leave the house in DC without anything t you’re ready to hand over.

DC voters aren’t capable of keeping their city safe. Nothing will be fixed unless Congress takes things into its own hands (presumably under GOP control). Get rid of the bad laws, get rid of the judges, and replace everyone at the USAO to start. There’s no reason why they can’t why they can’t start imposing 20 mandatory minimums for carjackings and getting super predators off the streets, for instance.

The elected AG handles juvenile crime. Where we are now is Racine’s legacy, unless you believe that criminals only start committing crimes after they turn 18.

Memba when Bowser broke the quarantine to travel to Biden’s victory party? Now would be a good time for a follow up conversation with POTUS.

You forgot how short staffed they are. Biden is not helping and the Senate is not confirming judges. DC has not been a priority for them. I don't know why the Mayor is running around like her hair is on fire.

The no paper rate began to rise in 2017, this isn't about Graves per se. Although he has been somewhat duplicitous in reporting slight improvements for media events only for the no paper rate to drop again immediately. And even the improvements are outliers re: other D cities by orders of magnitude. Graves is reliant on career staff and a large number of staff who are detailed for 1 year from other agencies and who have no trial experience. So those that do hold a lot of sway.

The story goes around that there was a cohort of old timers who aggressively prosecuted even marginal cases, who all retired around the same time. The office culture changed significantly.

Everything starts with city council. If you want change, get rid of Charles Allen and Janeese Lewis George, the cochairs of the pro-criminal caucus

Bowser and the police department have offered a million ideas. Almost all of them have been rejected by our city council.

1). The Youth Rehabilitation Act (YRA) which releases "kids" under the age of 26 for first time offenses - even gun charges, they get a slap on the wrist, a short period of probation and they are out on the streets again - this is even for gun charges. . .

3.). Leadership at OAG is also weak - they run a "hugs not thugs" program instead of actually penalizing delinquent juveniles.
. . . .

But don’t you believe in giving kids a second chance? Look, these kids all come from under-resources communities. It is not fair to just lock them up in jail.

The right approach really is “hugs, not thugs.”

Yep. Time to get rid of catch-and-release Janeese.
