WWYD - Thanksgiving + Germs

Thanks for those of you who responded with kindness. Just cancelled our plans and ordered stuff to cook ourselves via target drive up. Now to break the news to our kids…. 😟😕

Clearly you suck at parenting

No OP this is non negotiable

What good parent takes their family someone knowing the other family is sick

Not to mention how awful are you going to a sick home where they now take care of themselves and you?

It really stinks when we get sick around the holidays. Nobody wants to miss out but you made the right call.

I agree that I might go if seeing these family members was important to me and I was OK with the risk of infection. If I didn't really want to see them or if an illness would mess up my nexr week I would skip.

I pretty much assume all family gatherings will have germs, but many times it is still worth the risk. But other times it's not and its OK to pass!

Storytime: my MIL had parainfluenza one Thanksgiving. She said it was "mild" but she went to the doctor 2x before we came because she felt so bad. FIL admitted later that the doctor had warned her both times to isolate and especially to avoid contact with small kids because that was when the mystery liver failure in kids that was possibly linked to adenovirus was going around, and that little kids were getting hit the hardest with the bug.

She lied and told us she was just a little congested from allergies because, I guess, she wanted to see her grandbabies.

We all got it from her, it was 105 fevers and shaking chills, vomiting, hallucinating bad. Our little ones got hit the hardest. It was so selfish and terrible of her, especially when she actually had the audacity to claim our kids only got sick because we let take off their hats outside after running around on the playground.

Geeze, that is a pretty quick way to make sure you don’t get to see the grandbabies very often anymore. How selfish!

We have one person in our house who is currently being treated for strep and everyone else feeling healthy. We showed up and people were annoyed that the healthy feeling ppl didn't get tested. I now feel bad that we didn't rule out the possibility that the rest of us have it.

What about judt a lingering cough no fever similar situation

I’m pretty laid back about germs compared to most, and I wouldn’t go. If they have fevers they are really sick, and quite likely contagious.

I think that’s different. Coughs can linger for ages when the person isn’t spreading the virus anymore.

I’ve never heard of asymptomatic people getting tested for strep.

Day 10 and no symptoms, I'd go.

But they are still symptomatic, so hard pass.

With direct exposure yes. It is possible to be carrier without symptoms.

Good for you for cancelling. They might have Covid and something else viral...(like last year at Thanksgiving, we all had flu A...we know because kid was so sick, we went to the ER)..
