Charles Allen Recall?

| A recall is a wasted effort unless there is a strong candidate to run against him. I’m not sure why Ward 6 can’t produce one. The Hatch Act probably is a big problem since no feds can run. |

Well today's article in the Post about H Street, which Allen is conspicuously absent from, would be a useful piece of evidence in support of recall: https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/11/20/h-street-corridor-dc-crime/
Allen became Ward Rep in 2014, when H Street was in a serious upswing -- the big Whole Foods development was in process, and the development of the west End of H Street was already well-established with the construction of several new apartment buildings and a Giant. The east end of H Street was filled with long-time favorites like Rock n Roll Hotel, H Street Country Club, Biergarten Haus, and the Argonaut being joined by newcomers like Maketto. 9 years and one pandemic later, the street's in real trouble and there doesn't seem to be any efforts being made by Allen's office to save it. And he lives like 3 blocks away! Is he working with the police department to address crime? What about the business district to encourage investment and support the businesses that are there? So many have shuttered in the last year or two with owners saying "we can't take it any more." Where is he? What about working with developers to get new investment coming in? Does he work on enforcing taxes for vacant properties to incentivize landlords to find tenants? Does he work with local shelters and support groups to address the increase in pan handlers and illegal drug use on the corridor? What is he doing to address the problem of weed shops using a loophole to illegally sell marijuana up and down H Street (they are technically "gifting" the weed, with the sale of a non-drug item, but everyone knows what is actually happening). I am at a point with Allen where I would very much like to ask him what exactly it is he DOES here. I think blaming him for crime in DC is silly, but this is about constituent services, business welfare, and safety, all very much things he should be working on as our full-time, paid, Ward rep. Where is he? |

Given the Republican Congressman Andy Harris's rider that prevents the District from truly addressing these I-71-legitimized shops, being mad at Allen on this is useless, though he and some other Councilmembers have lawyered a way to giving ABCA some authority to shut these shops down beginning 2/1. |

Can't wait until he pulls out the "because it's cold outside" excuse he tried to use previously. I would bet a lot of money that he says that tonight and claims it's the main reason kids are carjacking. |
