Of course they won’t over $2. But the atmosphere of lawlessness infects Metro, which 5-10 years ago was very safe. |
Then it's high time that he finally faced the "rap music" for his crimes. |
Very true. And fare jumping was often a time when people would be picked up on an outstanding warrant or have weapons. Then DC decriminalized and did not even include an enforcement mechanism for civil penalties. And there was no requirement to provide ID or a correct name. We NEVER had shootings and stabbings during rush hour at major hubs like Metro Center and L'E as have happened recently. Those who have the option of driving, will, and those without a car or who can't afford parking, or who can't work remotely, will be the prey. |
I FULLY BELIEVE THERE IS AN UPTICK IN CRIME AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT IT SO MUCH I MAY MOVE AWAY FROM THE CITY. But I think this is sloppy/irresponsible use of data because I’m pretty sure ridership is still recovering from Covid. They should be giving us more years for comparison. |
I checked, metro has a handy little ridership tool that says ridership is up 39% for October over last year. I’m not at all saying that means a big increase in crime is acceptable or even predictable, but it’s important context. |
| We need to have a visible metro police presence on trains and on buses. There was ANOTHER report of an armed man harassing school kids on a bus to mcarthur high school. My kid takes metro to high school and has witnessed violence and felt threatened in and around stations. DCI kids have been jumped by Fort Totten. This has got to stop. |
The turnstile jumpers already ride free. I’m just the sucker who pays. |
| I used to take metro 10-15 years ago and homestly, I did not feel safe then, I knew women who were accosted by mental ill homeless people. It is not really safe. |
| *honestly |
Presumably that’s only paid ridership - those who swipe fare cards to enter a station or board a bus. Think of all the lowlife fare jumpers who steal transit services. |
Do you have a source? I follow every local alert/twitter, etc., and this is the first I’ve heard about it. |
Totally agree, just saw this as well. Just creates an "anything goes" atmosphere similar to "broken windows." |
I totally disagree that the metro was unsafe 10+ years ago. I was a woman in my 20s and took it daily as a commuter and plenty of times late at night after going out. There were always a lot of people and most were "normal" which made it feel very safe. |
| Doesn't requiring a paid fare keep the riff raff off of the metro? |
