The Cabin John MS boundaries are bonkers.

Lakelands MS and Ridgeview MS are both much closer for those two northernmost islands. One of the benefits of a larger boundary study is the ability to do a lot of shuffling.

Wow! Agreed, those boundaries are bonkers. How did that even come about?
CJ and Hoover are 3 blocks apart, so something wacky was bound to happen. They created as walkable boundaries as they could for Hoover and Frost and then tossed the remaining elementary schools into CJ.

DP. Also in the 80s Cabin John was closed due to low enrollment and everyone went to Hoover. Then it reopened and they must have come up with these new boundaries then.

Agreed they are closer, it will just take quite a lot of shuffling to fit 500 kids into one of them. Assuming they are going to avoid split articulation since they said they are trying to avoid it in the above video.

And now that the BOE will especially strive to make more diverse schools, who knows where they'll send them?

Even if they go purely based on proximity, that CJMS boundary needs to change. That is one craptastic boundary.

That patchwork is typical of new development in an area that has older surrounding neighborhoods. Let's add 50-100 house here. Hmmm, the closest school is over-capacity. We'll send them to the next one over ...

You do know the boundary policy was changed to make that impossible, right?

I know that they still look at proximity.

No. Frost Middle School is closer.

They may try to avoid it, but I don't think they will succeed in avoiding it, at least not in all cases.

According to the MCPS' own CIP documents (Appendix E), Cabin John MS is (and projected in the future) to be under capacity. If the two Northern sections of Cabin John are re-zoned, where will the other students come from? Most likely Frost MS, which is currently (and projected in the future) slightly under capacity. So where will they get the Frost students from? Good question.

Sorry they can pull from both Frost and Hoover MS. Both are under capacity, so would need to pull from elsewhere?

But they don't have to especially strive to look at proximity like they do diversity. So all the schools in the CJ cluster are in danger of being busted even farther than they are now for diversity.

Maybe you could shift the southern tip of Frost's eastern cluster to Cabin John, and backfill the northern areas into Frost, if you can make the numbers work. But the result is still going to look pretty weird. I have a feeling we're going to end up with more weird looking boundaries no matter what they try to do.

They'll pull from wherever they need to to make the schools more diverse.

I hope you and your family enjoy Gaithersburg Middle School.

Gaithersburg MS feeds Gaithersburg HS, which has to shed -184 students (presumably to Crown). True, the BOE could just rezone all of Gaithersburg MS into Crown (and trash a brand new HS), which I'm sure will go down well with the business owners at Crown? Crown is just 5 minutes up the street from the new MCPD training academy being built.

"Investigation underway into massive fight at Gaithersburg High School football game"

I can see the headlines now. But no one said the BOE were the brightest bulbs, so it could happen?
