APS Math Pathways - Trig 9th grade

DD is taking Alg 1 and Geometry at DHMS in 7th. I’m not sure what happens in 8th but they changed something for one math section.

That is really strange and seems like a horrible idea! Algebra is such a foundational class, why would they combine it with geometry (which is also a foundational class!)

I assume they are two different classes and the kid loses an elective.

But why would you do that?!! You end up taking alg2/trig as an eighth grader, precalc as a freshman, calc ab as a sophomore, calc bc as a junior and then what? If you are a science or engineering major there is a good chance you’ll have to repeat a large chunk of that in college.

In APS your kid will have to take Alg 2 class online in eighth grade. I don’t know why HB would take your child as an admin transfer when they offer the class online.

I don’t know where in Arlington you will be working. If you are working in North Arlington, I would strongly recommend looking at Fcps Longfellow and Mclean pyramid. The math education is much stronger there.

The neighborhoods that feed into those FCPS schools are literally right next to North Arlington.

But it's an option program and difficult to get a seat. You could push for an administrative transfer if Alg 2 isn't available at any other MSs - I don't believe it is.

Oh great we’ll just tell than that HB is the only MS which will meet our child’s specific academic needs. Very helpful thanks.

It has worked for other people.

You should look at FCPS. Probably a better fit for you.

We’ve heard that but job is in Arlington and requires long and variable hours so want to be close.

So it’s worked before were those kids math transfers too?

No they are not going to let you into HB because your child wants to take a more advanced math class. Why don't you look at Fairfax? Parts of it are very close to Arlington.

I too agree. I don't quite understand the push for kids to be taking advanced math so early. Best case, you skip over 2 semesters of calculus in college. You will still have to take multivariable calculus and differential equations at minimum as an engineering student. You can do all of that even if you take Calculus as a senior in high school and get a 4/5 on the Calc BC exam.

Years ago, one of my kids' MS classmates went to the nearest high school to take math there.

If you take BC in 11th and aren't doing IB, there are DE classes you can take in 12th. If you take BC in 10th -- which a kid did a couple of years ago -- I don't know what the options are in 12th, but there must be something

There’s multivariate calc and also AP statistics, plus additional DE options, I believe.

Genuine question- does HB offer the full advanced track anyway?

HB doesn't have IB or DE.

My kid at HB is taking multi-variable calculus and AP statistics. There is also an independent study/ small group number theory course. He plans to study engineering and will have to take multivariable calculus again as a freshman. I'm not really sure of the value of this sort of accelerated math in HS.

Having seen content in high school previously helps kids if they retake the course in college. Studies show that kids who retake calculus in college get higher grades than kids who are taking calculus for the first time. And that doesn't account for the first-time college calculus takers who end up struggling to the point that they drop the course. Taking calculus again in college builds deeper understanding the second time through and sets them up for better success. Same logic for multivariable calculus.
