APS Math Pathways - Trig 9th grade

Anonymous
DS is moving from another school system where they do a program of PreAlg in 6th, Alg 1 and Geometry in 7th, and Alg 2 in 8th, then Trig and PreCalc in 9th.

It’s a math/science magnet, but do any a similar pathway in middle and high school? He’s in 7th now, so looking for 8th grade alg 2 next year when we move. From the website I can’t find any options. I want to try to avoid calling ALL the middle schools just to check; we assume we could transfer if a MS offers it.

None of the APS middle schools will offer Algebra 2 in 8th. The APS advanced track for math puts kids in geometry in 8th – as shown in that link.

The only school where it *might* be able to happen is HB Woodlawn, because MS and HS are housed in the same building BUT it is a lottery school, so you can’t just enroll.

Since H-B has MS and HS co-located I wonder if an 8th grader could take Alg 2 in 8th, etc.

But it's an option program and difficult to get a seat. You could push for an administrative transfer if Alg 2 isn't available at any other MSs - I don't believe it is.

Oh great we’ll just tell than that HB is the only MS which will meet our child’s specific academic needs. Very helpful thanks.

It has worked for other people.

You should look at FCPS. Probably a better fit for you.

We’ve heard that but job is in Arlington and requires long and variable hours so want to be close.

So it’s worked before were those kids math transfers too?

If you want relevant, helpful advice from knowledgeable people then maybe don't sht on them.

FCPS is definitely more your speed. Commute isn't that bad at all.

Do not plan on APS deviating at all for your child. I would call the math department at Syphax with your specific question - don’t bother asking here. I have tried for two years to get them to see unique circumstances and gotten nowhere. Good luck!

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude? What did I say?

DD is taking Alg 1 and Geometry at DHMS in 7th. I’m not sure what happens in 8th but they changed something for one math section.
