FYI- on 99.99% of websites (well, at least the type of places that a t(w)een would shop at for a bar mitzvah dress- Lulu's, Macy's, etc.) you can do a filter of dresses to include or exclude certain styles (a-line, body con, skater, etc.), necklines, sleeve length, material, color, midi vs maxi vs mini, and so on.
Here's what comes up when I do a filter for "Skater Dresses" on lulu's...some are not the correct level of formal for a bat mitzvah, but appropriate options galore. https://www.lulus.com/categories/13_1274/skater-dresses.html |
| Thank you for sharing, OP. It looks like a great dress. |
The dress is lovely, and I'm sure your child looked beautiful. I still would have preferred the "babyish" dresses. Your child is 12. She has the rest of her teen years to wear short dresses with cutouts. I don't care if my child looks sophisticated at 12. Stop criticizing her friends parents who want their 12 year old children to look like children. |
True. Also a bat mitzvah is a religious event in a synagogue. There shouldn’t be cut-outs, especially on a 12 year old. It’s not a bar. |
Op here. Thanks for your comment. Do you have a child around this age? Because I can tell you that most of the girls (almost everyone) at the bat mitzvahs wear dresses like this: https://www.lucyinthesky.com/shop/breakaway-bodycon-in-shimmer-black-54807?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=19998568705&utm_content=&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAo7KqBhDhARIsAKhZ4uhyLj3yt9kUVGwokVHtrLlGKnbxVkhTMMFxpe6SaEjJnlJkQr-sYlcaAsQDEALw_wcB This is no exaggeration. I am just saying that it's hard to find something that looks sophisticated, but not too mature. A kid is not comfortable in a sea of peers dressed like that-- wearing something that looks like it could have come from the Children's Place. DD's friend texted her mom angrily from the event that her dress was all wrong. (I thought this girl looked very beautiful. But "young" considering the crowd.) Hence, my post. I hope it was helpful to some. If you have a different experience, please let me know. Maybe it is a regional thing. I am in NYC area. |
OP again. The link I shared of the bodycon dress in the previous post is the kind of dress the Jewish girls in the friend group, who go to Bat Mitzvahs all the time and have been Bat Mitzvah'd (sp?) themselves, wear all the time at these events. |
OP here. Great question. It can go either way. DD has sometimes done Nike Air Forces (and I have leaned that color coordination is not that important), but also has some flat, comfortable dress shoes to wear with dresses. She wore the flats with the dress in the OP. |
| I'm not judging, but is that really appropriate for a religious ceremony in 2023? She went to the synagogue in that, not just the party? |
It was the in the ballroom of the synagogue. The ceremony was over. However, girls do wear bodycon dresses to the ceremony too, but throw a shawl or cardigan on top. Thanks everyone for your nice responses. |

Mom of boys here - just wondering why they are called skater dresses...like figure skaters? I'm laughing bc when I first read it I thought skateboarding and was super curious what the dresses might look like!
OP - I love the dress you and your daughter picked out. Hope she had a fabulous time. |
| Sorry but that dress is terrible. There are SO many other options on Lulus. |
There are dresses that aren't great on the model, but look better in real life. I'll bet OP's DD looked great |
How does that make it right? |
She fits in. Then it's right. NP |
Everyone has their own taste. That’s why stores sell huge varieties. |
