High school Grades entered at last minute that impact 25-50% or more of grade for quarter

What? You really think there is a conspiracy where teachers force grades to meet a distribution?

I wish I had that much time/energy.

I give a test, put the scores in the gradebook, and the scores are distributed as they are. My first period class has all As and Bs with 1 C and 2 Ds. My 8th period (same course!) has half Cs and Ds.

There is no manipulation. Literally the only changing I might do is bump the 89.4 senior who just got an A on their test to an A- to send with their college apps. Everyone else gets what they get.

But my grades were also 99% done last week, and I’m only grading late work this weekend.

In 2 classes it's because the assignments that could for the largest percent of the grade were given in the past few weeks so basically 50% of the class grade is undetermined. In once class the teacher is just really behind grading. (No, it's not English). Assignments from September-November are slowly being entered into gradebook.

Anyone else noticing this?

Agree, this should not be allowed. Mine is waiting to see a couple grade that still aren't in gradebook from the last few weeks. It's inexcusable.

I totally agree to this. My DS has told the teacher multiple times that the assignment was turned in and the teacher said she would fix it. Never did and progress report shows missing assignment. It totally changed the grade to one lower grade.

This has happened multiple times at the school. These are students who are paying attention and getting grades they didn’t deserve. It’s unacceptable!

Snap a picture when the assignment is turned or the electronic receipt of submission.

So is there a rule or a standard for teachers to follow about entering grades in SIS?

We're only dealing with middle school right now, but in a lot of ways, these are the pivotal years where you, as a parent, want to provide support and make sure assignments are turned in on time, tests are retaken if they need to be, etc. And SIS is abysmally behind with the end of the semester a couple weeks away.

English has zero updates since the first quarter grade was posted
Science nothing since 12/5
Algebra 1 nothing since 12/1

Do I ask the teachers? Talk to the principal?

This is so unfair to kids. Wait until senior year and they're applying to colleges. Get it together teachers!

DS has not had grades put in 4 out of 7 classes since NOVEMBER. I complained to department heads and his counselor. Do your freaking jobs, teachers.

There is not any timeline. Your child can ask the teachers, but it will likely not get them anywhere. You can certainly talk to the principal, but that will likely not get them anywhere, either.

2 weeks after an assignment (except for a major essay or massive project) grades should be entered.
There should be ~1 grade per week, minimum 9 per quarter.

If they are not following these rules, reach out to the administrator in charge. Department head is just a teacher. Counselor is not in any way responsible for babysitting teachers. Admin can actually get into the teacher's gradebook and pressure them to input data.

My kids teachers all do it differently. I think we are getting too reliant on sis. The kids should know their grades already. The teachers return work/tests even if they haven’t entered in to sis.

YES and it royally pisses me off. It's inexcusable.

They should but they don't. While a couple of the classes provide the work back (even if they are not in SIS), 3 do not. So, for one science class, there are 2 lab grades in there for ALL OF THE QUARTER. No tests. No quizzes. And DC has not been given the grades on those. So literally has no idea what the grade will be.

Yeah, their schoology assignments aren't graded either. For us, I think it's because every teacher was required to switch to standards based grading this year and they don't know how they want to do it.

You don't have a high schooler, do you?

Nearly all the assignments are submitted online. Grades are not returned in class. For many assignments, students get the grades when the assignment grade is entered into SIS.

If the teacher does not enter the grades then the kid will not know their grade.

Every course syllabus should be required to not only state grading policy but also include a grade turnaround time. If teacher is overwhelmed with workload and cannot return assignment grade within two weeks, then it should be an automatic A. Then far from complaining, students would be praying their teacher misses the grading deadline, and their parents would be in a blissful state observing a sea of As every time they login into SIS.
