Doctoring up jarred pasta sauce to make it your own

Anonymous
I either make my own sauce or just use Rao's. It's perfect and doesn't need to be doctored.

All of these are great, and I do a combo of them all, but have not seen this one:

FENNEL SEEDS
so amazing. Add a tsp or so.

Agree. I used to “doctor” Rao’s sauce but now I just make my own using canned tomato sauce. Just as quick and easy (and delicious).

Usually just a capful of Mrs. Dash garlic and herb seasoning because I’m super lazy. But this next one will probably be controversial — a few dollops of Worcestershire sauce. My MIL does it. I thought she was crazy. It actually tastes good.

Chopped spinach, shredded carrots, and sliced mushrooms are my favorite add ins, that and onion and garlic when cooking the ground beef (for my kids). Also extra basil.

Interesting, I'll have to try this!

I extract all the added sugar first.

Rao's (tomato basil) doesn't have any added sugar. You should try that one.

I don’t think any of Rao’s sauces have added sugar. That’s usually one of the reasons people recommend them.

I’m with you on the garlic, but adding the stick of butter is taking a health food and making it into sludge for your arteries.

At most add a tablespoon of evoo, but if it’s decent pasta sauce it should already be made with some.

For folks eating Rao’s - you can spend half as much and have an equally delicious, no sugar added sauce if you try Mezzetta’s, the roasted garlic is especially good.

I sauté garlic and onion with a good amount of olive oil, add the jar sauce, throw in a little red wine, simmer 20min.

I like a spicy sauce so I also dump red pepper flakes into it if it’s just me eating.

I have never gotten Rao’s. I am usually scared by the price- I think a jar is at least $7.00.

For my sauce- usually Ragu or store brand, I usually add some red wine, fresh veggies and fresh herbs.

Mezzetta’s is still $7 a jar. Rao’s isn’t $14 a jar. And it’s always on sale now.
