What is it about colleges that brings out so many weird personal vendettas?

Because everyone wants the best for their child and they think certain schools are better and will result in their child being more successful in life.

It’s a game and I want to win it. 😂

there are some personalities in this subculture, I've grown to really dislike, like the admissions dean at Dartmouth. Pompous, delusional, some weird belief he's an agent of equity. I'm so over this bullshit.

Rivalries are not the same as vendettas.

I know several people who went to certain schools who are just extremely horrible people and I hate them, and I like to trash their schools on these boards sometimes out of spite.

It has zero to do with how hard the school is to get into, especially now, since the people who make me hate these schools all went to college in the late 90s or early 00s.

But I also think it's interesting that other people ALSO seem to hate Notre Dame. Maybe it produces a lot of very annoying graduates?

NP. Wow. I literally cannot imagine being so dedicated to a grudge this way. This seems profoundly maladjusted to me.

Well, this is the DMV area, so…

While this is absolutely true, many in the DMV are completely obnoxious, I would venture to say this particular response was sarcasm. Can't believe you bit on it. To answer the OP I only see that kind of behavior on this board which amplifies the previous observation. In my normal face to face encounters with real and well-adjusted adults I never see this behavior.

Yes. Colleges are like mating in that respect. The experience highlights shortcomings.

Um, have you lived here long? From Ohio or some such?

+1 The PP could be one of the most immature responses I've seen on DCUM. And that's saying a lot!

Couple Notre Dame grads here, I see.

Everyone has their biases. It's why you should take everything on here with a grain of salt. I would bet a significant number of the posts on DCUM have similar motivations to this, actually. People post that they hate a certain baby name (because their colleague they hate named their baby that). That they think people who send their kids to daycare are lazy (because they're a SAHM whose sister works and sends kids to daycare, and feels their sister looks down on them). That DCPS is crap and if you send your kid's there, you're an idiot (because their DH hates the city so they are stuck in the burbs and bitter about it). That Rav 4s are crap cars (because their neighbor is a jerk and drives a Rav 4). And so on.

I would be at least 50% of posts on DCUM are motivated in similar ways. Including the posts right above mine here.

You don't remember the "Cornel" guy? And so many others like him?

It’s this. For some - but especially for those who consider themselves elite and the strivers - college is a proxy for all of this. For the strivers, it’s a way to beat/match those with money/elite status - after all, not every rich kid is smart and/or motivated.

I say this with love. A lot of people in this forum need therapy.
