What is it about colleges that brings out so many weird personal vendettas?

Is it just the highly rejective nature of elite college admissions today?

I guess people feel like results reflect on their parenting, financials, wisdom, savvy, genetic pool etc.

I will answer this for myself. Not sure if other people are like this.

I know several people who went to certain schools who are just extremely horrible people and I hate them, and I like to trash their schools on these boards sometimes out of spite.

It has zero to do with how hard the school is to get into, especially now, since the people who make me hate these schools all went to college in the late 90s or early 00s.

But I also think it's interesting that other people ALSO seem to hate Notre Dame. Maybe it produces a lot of very annoying graduates?

I suspect it’s related to the hollowing out of the middle class and our growing sense that only a lucky few get to hit the economic jackpot, while the rest will scrape for pennies and be unable to afford a home/car/medicine, etc. Scarcity breeds competition etc.

I have not noticed any "weird, personal vendettas" against any schools. However, I have noticed many over zealous supporters of particular schools who misrepresent the truth in order to promote that specific school.

there are some personalities in this subculture, I've grown to really dislike, like the admissions dean at Dartmouth. Pompous, delusional, some weird belief he's an agent of equity. I'm so over this bullshit.

What? There are affordable colleges for everyone, and plenty of highly successful people come out of Non-T25 universities.
