It's a new class (and ridiculous, if AP classes are supposed to be college level classes). |
Just chill. We are barely one quarter in. Things will likely ramp up. |
The IAAT percentile is ranking of student performance, not a measurement of fluency or anything else |
OP, do the Khan Academy course challenge for Math 8 /Prealgebra and and Algebra.
If Prealgebra is a breeze and half of Algebra is doable, fight for an upgrade. But if your child doesn't love studying practicing math at home, don't accelerate, because math gets harder later. |
It's a normed percentile. OP's DC wasn't graded on her class's curve. |
ADHD kids overperform relative to where timed aptitude tests would place them.
But also they underperform based on untimed aptitude tests. ADHD makes things hard. And the board's general opinion is that a kid who scraped through with a 91 probably shouldn't take Algebra I as a 7th grader. I wouldn't worry too much about your kid's placement, and barring something you haven't told us -- e.g. she already completed, with flying colors, AOPS's pre-algebra class and is midway though Algebra, I would advise not pushing her into Algebra I. |
OP here. I'm sorry but my understanding is the exact opposite, at least in my kid's case. She was evaluated by a healthcare professional and the result was that her ADHD is a barrier for time-sensitive assignments. |
As a thought...if she joins the Algebra class now, so late in the semester, she will already have missed a lot of concepts, making it hard for her to learn and do the new ones... |
DP. Reread the post, that's what the PP is saying. The current placement is too easy for your DC. But the next level will be too hard. And it's not worth it for math - don't do that to your DC. On another thread on this forum, someone said don't push 2e kids too far or too fast. They may have a high IQ but the deficits of EF or working memory or processing speed are real. |
If your child has a learning disability such as ADHD they should not be in accelerated math classes, period. |
You're an ableist idiot. My kid has ADHD and anxiety. They're in AP calc in 10th grade with straight As throughout and with no extra time accommodations. They also got a 98th percentile on the IAAT with no accommodations. Many ADHD kids hyperfocus, especially when they find the material interesting. |
DP. Name-calling doesn't help anything. Your DC may be doing fine in their classes but your DC is a different child than OP's DC. Should OP's DC be taking AP Calc (AB? BC?) in 10th grade? Not with that IAAT score. Without big changes, OP's DC seems to be in the correct placement. (And some ADHD kids hyperfocus but not all - and certainly not all on math.) |
PP made the blanket statement that no child with ADHD should be in advanced math. Only an ableist idiot would make such a blanket statement. OP’s DD will be taking algebra in 8th, which is still accelerated and apparently verboten to PP. |
The IAAT is not just a screener, it is a requirement. Some schools will reconsider students and place them in Algebra if they have a high SOL score but just miss the 91st percentile on the IOWA, but the time to ask about that would have been over the summer. You could talk to the principal, but you are probably out of luck. |
Yes, I don’t see how they can expect all 8th graders to take Algebra 1. I know I’m old, but when I was in 8th grade Algebra 1 was the most advanced class available, and in my high school there were still juniors and seniors taking Algebra 1. |
