Engagement Ring upgrade

I almost always do. I love looking at diamonds, and I love looking at the rings that have colored stones too. But my grandfather was a geologist and my first science fair project was about geodes, so maybe I'm not normal with this.

I think you’re normal. I love looking at people’s rings (and other jewelry). They’re pretty—it’s kind of the point!

It sounds like you're not into it. I wouldn't do an upgrade just for the status if you like what you already have.
I'd much prefer a trip. Ymmv.

Thanks everyone! I’m going to think about other jewelry I might want to have. I’d like to be responsive to DH since he never takes initiative to think of such things. I want him to know I appreciate it. What are some other jewelry items others have received for a big anniversary?

We upgraded mine at 15 years because the original was 1/3 ct—that’s all two broke 20 year olds could afford! New one is 1.5 ct and I wouldn’t want to go bigger for daily wear. I want to figure out something to do with the original tiny diamond but haven’t found a plan yet.

My new setting is a bezel set, so much more comfortable, and I love it. So consider whether a new setting would be more fun to do!

I also have 1.75 and redid setting at 10 yrs. I’m glad I kept my original diamond. I love the ring and wear it all the time.

1.75 is huge.

I wish I had your problem! all I can think about is college tuition.

I was just going to say that I haven't noticed anyone wear rings anymore. Finally less is more.

If you’re willing to wait until Spring, the Smithsonian Craft Show is a really fun place to shop for jewelry.

I mean, yeah it's a "fun place to shop for jewelry"... but you aren't going to find anything on the level of what OP's DH is suggesting.

I am the PP who said she'd want a tennis bracelet. A Cartier tank watch would be right up there too. I already have diamond stud earrings, but if I didn't, I'd want those. Or maybe Mikimoto pearls. Or big sapphire earrings. This is fun to think about lol.

What are you getting him for the anniversary? It should be equivalent, no?

I have a 1 carat ring that is a super nice / expensive stone - not that anyone knows/ appreciates that. At the time when I got it - I was 24 and didn't wear a lot of jewelry and I just could not fathom wearing any larger. I'm 42 now and kind of wish I got larger initially but I am no longer interested in upgrading. Frankly - none of my friends are interested in upgrading now - though all had similar thoughts to me at the time of the wedding. Now we are attached to our old rings and the way we were then and would rather spend our money elsewhere.
That said - we are all 300k not 850K HHI.

Same! We could afford to upgrade, but I’m too attached to my original stone.

I'd get a lab diamond even though money is not an object, you can't tell the difference. Either that or a large eternity band.
