We love Anguilla but I think kids that age will find it boring.
We are going to Grand Cayman. Nonstop United from IAD. Prices aren’t bad depending on your dates. |
Depends on what you expect from vacation. There are many beaches, but they are sort of what I would call wild. You will find horses, chicken roaming, no toilets, shade etc. But very natural beauty. We visited Playa negro ( unique experience with real black sand, but you would not swim there), playa Caracas (best island beach in our opinion), and a few other smaller ones. As far as island itself, there is a tourist area in South, Esperanza, but we stayed not far from the pier in Airbnb. Houses generally are older, you will see rust in and out due to their humidity. Again, we very much enjoyed the vacation ( did 4 days in Old San Juan and 4datsin Vieques), but I doubt we will go back soon or I would consider spending more than 4-5 days in Vieques. |
We flew to San Juan, spent few days in Old San Juan. Then took ferry. I thought if ferry being a messy process too, but would avoid flying small planes at all cost ( afraid. Ferry experience turned out to be very inexpensive and very smooth. Took Uber to the terminal ( had opportunity to see some of Puerto Rico while in road), boarded ferry, about 1 hour of in the water time. We left hotel in San Juan at 10am, we had ferry at 12-30 or so, we checked in our Airbnb at 3 pm with car already picked from rental. You will need a car there if you want to explore the island. And please book everything ahead of time. I bought ferry ride for 2 different times each way just in case if one cancels or we are late. Ferry us just 2 bucks per person. |
| Ok here, I see nobody mentioned Turks and Caicos? |
| St. Barts! |
That’s because of the uptick in violent crime. |
Any recommendations on where to stay? I’m not OP. |
New jet service Edit American Airlines initiated new, twice weekly nonstop jet service between its Miami (MIA) hub and Anguilla on 11 December 2021 operated by its American Eagle affiliate with Embraer ERJ-175 regional jets.[9] |

San Juan/PR.
If you don’t might go further afield (not sure what the flights are these days, maybe Barbados or Curacao) |
Sorry didn’t see you’ve done PR. I would hesitate to recc the USVI but it depends on what you want to do on your non-beach/exploring days. |
Ideally we are looking for good beaches, some marine life that can be seen from beaches, but open for into the ocean excursion. Green island, very open to explore jungle/parks/beaches, some local cuisine. We typically like to rent Airbnb, eat in and out, spend most time on the beach but still explore around a bit |
The AA flights have frequent weight issues, and they ask people to get off etc. I've taken it once, and it's 3ish hours from MIA, so you are not saving any time. I would take the non stop from IAD via United and ferry over. |
To clarify - take the non stop from IAD to SXM and ferry over. |
Any recs for where to stay in San Juan? |
| The answer is always the Mill Reef Club. |
