What would you recommend for island spring break vacation, that offers a mix if beach time ( good beaches) and some exploring experiences. Safe to explore, not being confined to just resort area (prefer to Airbnb and get a car to be free to explore). We did mexico, Dominican, Puerto Rico/Vieques.
Kids are 16 and 13. |
| St. John |

St. John or St. Thomas.
Definitely check out Water Island/Honeymoon Beach from either. We love to snorkel at Coki Beach (St. Thomas) and Magans Bay is beautiful, too. |
| Grand Cayman |
| Anguilla, its a bit of a hike to get their but beautiful and safe. We love to rent a jeep and explore. |
| Jamaica |
| Aruba |
|
St Croix
OP how did your family like Vieques, would you recommend that as a place to visit? We’re considering a trip there with our teenager. |
|
I also was going to say St. John.
Did you like PR/Vieques? How did you get to Vieques? I was interested but didn't want to fly in a small plane and ferry seemed like a mess. The ferry to St John is no problem at all. |

+1 for Aruba and Grand Cayman
|
Grand Cayman is easy to get to (some nonstops from BWI), supposedly the safest island in the Caribbean, and easy to get around. Definitely not a just stay at your resort or in the big tourist zone kind of place. You can rent a car and drive around to different beaches, try all kinds of roadside restaurants, explore caves, visit historical sites, snorkel and scuba. Just keep an eye on sargassum as the season approaches so you can give yourself realistic expectations for how enjoyable beaches on different parts of the island will be, and be aware things are expensive. |
| We rented homes in Tortola and St. Thomas. Tortola was a bit more remote but beautiful. We always had breakfast in, dinner out half the time and lunches on the go. With teens it was great. |

Where do you catch the ferry to St. John's?
|
Passenger ferries leave St. Thomas from either Red Hook or from Crown Bay. They both arrive in Cruz Bay, St. John. There is also a car ferry (if you rent a car on STT) from Red Hook to Cruz Bay. Here's a link to the info/schedules: https://www.vinow.com/travel/virgin-islands-ferry-schedules/stjohn/ |
| PP here- forgot to add that there is a passenger ferry from Charlotte Amalie also, but it is infrequent and doesn't run all year |
