I only want my child to get 30 min max HW per day

It is absurd to require children to work more hours per day than most office jobs. In our middle school they told us parents that if our children are spending more than 1.5 hours consistently (i.e, every day for weeks) really doing homework, we should tell the school so they’ll check if it is lack of coordination between teachers or if it is a problem of the student’s time use. My oldest, in 11th, still spends about an hour daily with schoolwork and she’s gotten really good with planning so she breaks the required homework or study in several days so she doesn’t have to do a lot on a single day.

It depends entirely on how much they want to achieve (AP classes vs non, is instrumental music part of their load, variety athlete or not, etc)

+1. They are in school all day. Other than essays/papers (which do require a chunk of time that may not be possible in class) there is no need for more than a little bit of homework to reinforce what was done in class.

What grade are you talking about? Middle school or 11th grade? Big difference. I think most high schoolers have 1-3 hours per night, depending on course rigor.

It’s completely possible to do 30 mins/night, if that’s your aim. Avoid honors and AP classes and take a study hall. Do NOT nag your kid’s teacher. Pick appropriate course levels for them.

When I see this argument, it is always coming from rich parents. The underlying belief is that their kid doesn’t need homework because their kid will be set up for life regardless.

My kid’s science teacher records a video for them watch ahead of class so they’re familiar with content, then in class she lectures more and they do lab work in class. For HW they have to do lab notebook, which is time consuming. Plus studying for exams. This is pretty standard for high school science. English class- lots of reading. They write essays in class now to avoid cheating. Math- lots of equations and studying for test. Learning takes time. I’m sorry.

This. If you really only want 30 min pick easy courses. You’re not going to pass honors or AP classes with minutes of homework. If that’s your priority go for it.

Our diverse, practically Title 1 school gives very little homework that can’t be done at the end of class or in study hall. I’m not sure it’s something to aspire to. My straight A honors kids are lazy.

Many folks cut back on the extra curriculars during the school week because they value academics more. If you value sports or whatever more, then that is what you’ll teach by your actions. I’m sure your kid spends more than 30 min in other after school activities. But hey, if your kid is good enough in sports to get a sports scholarship, maybe a C average is all your kid will need.

My kid isn’t that great in sports so he gets 1 weekend extra curricular. Weekdays are for homework, studying, and downtime because he’s going to need a much better than C average.

Kids go to school all day, they should not need an additional 3 hours of academic work at home, it absolutely is too much even without sports or other activities.

There are a ton of schools that admit most applicants. A ton.
