Because Facebook (and all social media) spies on us for our government, and TikTok spies on us for somebody else's government. If China was sharing data with five-eyes, they wouldn't be banned anywhere. |
How do you feel about the government allowing tons of personal data to get in the hands of companies who will sell it to anybody? What could go wrong? (Answer: lots of things already have gone wrong.) |
It's a vast right-wing conspiracy? |
I think it managed to get Trump elected, so something good did happen. Or bad, depending on your view. https://www.cnet.com/news/politics/facebook-cambridge-analytica-data-mining-and-trump-what-you-need-to-know/ |
Banning it for government devices seems to be nonpartisan. Banning it for the masses is ironically something China would do. |
The government bans all sorts of things to the masses. I guess we live in China. |
What speech platforms are banned for the masses in America? And, despite the best efforts of anti-American Republicans like Miyares, we’re not China yet. But we could be if we’re not careful. |
Tiktok, being a private company, is not 1A protected. The government shutdown backpage. Where were you then? People needed that website to make a living. |
It's all old white boomers who freak out about their "data" Their data is already everywhere and I am pretty sure China doesn't care too much about Bob & Susan Smith from Herndon, VA |
Here is the thing you don't get. With the data China collects, it can target you with content. That may not matter to YOU, but what about your kids?
https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/family/story/tiktok-pushes-harmful-content-teens-39-seconds-new-95357982 |
Essentially, the app works as intended. If you interact with content with a certain subject or theme, the app gives you more of it. THAT'S WHAT USERS WANT. If i like gardening, I want to see more gardening. If I like books, I want to see more books. Get it? These parents that are up on arms have to talk to their kids about the content they are seeking out and interacting with. It's not the app's fault that Jimmy is looking up the content. Obviously, users flag content that's harmful, but in the meantime, you need to talk to Jimmy, not ban the whole app. Duh. Meta has a weaker algorithm, so you get served content that is sometimes in line if your interests and sometimes not. |
|
ALL apps collect info about your preferences and attempt to give you want you want.
This isn't a government conspiracy, it's good business. And Tiktok changed it's data practices after the senate hearing. Calm down. Google, Amazon, and Apple have more on you than tiktok over will and they absolutely allow all kinds of entities, political and otherwise, to use that data to target you. Just look at the ads on the side of your screen when you're on DCUM. |
Then don't let your kids download it until they are mature enough. The internet is a far darker place than Tik Tok... |
TikTok is a national security risk.https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/3354874/leaders-say-tiktok-is-potential-cybersecurity-risk-to-us/ Beyond that, it turns our teens into vapid automatons. I say ban it! |
|
Also, China has very different rules for TikTok for their own kids.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j0xzuh-6rY They want our kids to become mindless, trivial and non-productive. |
