Paper plates on reality TV?

Anonymous
I don’t understand the TV question.

Last time my parents visited, my dad said, you know I think I’ve noticed one thing that would help you. I think you should use paper plates.

I’ve used them consistently for a year. Sorry, trees. But, maybe I’ve saved on the water used to wash. It’s also helping me stay on top of dishes for the first time. So, my dad was right.

We use paper plates and paper napkins, regular flatware and regular drinkware. It saves a lot of time and water because we only run one load in the dishwasher. DH and I grew up UMC and have several sets of dishes and cloth napkins. It's about convenience, like disposable diapers, not class.

I don't think I've ever known anyone who has used paper products regularly. Am regular middle to upper middle class. I didn't know it was a thing. Isn't it expensive? Is it because people move around a lot?

The Duggars used styrofoam. But yeah lots of the families who have multiples or just many kids use disposable plates. Even ones on tiktok do it, and the comments are always about the environment.

If you have a dishwasher, the saving time over environmental destruction is a poor choice.

It's not that hard if you don't let them sit. Or, then soak in sink before putting in DW.

No, it's because we eat a lot of meals at home and the dishes pile up. Disposable diapers are expensive and wasteful compared to cloth but people use them for convenience.

Very few household tasks are hard. It is a matter of priorities.

Airplane travel is bad for the environment. Buying new electronics is bad for the environment. Renovating your home is bad for the environment. Driving a car vs. bicycling is bad for the environment. Yet all those things are considered normal for UMC families.

I always use paper plates for pizza night. Other than that, I use dinnerware and kitchen tools that can go in the dishwasher so it’s easy cleanup. It feels nicer to eat on real plates etc.

Exactly why I said the environment is a bigger priority. If it's not, you don't understand how climate change will affect us, especially your kids and grandkids.

I do understand which is why we only use one car, hang dry all our laundry, decided not to renovate our home an dump all that stuff in a landfill, limit our household purchases, limit travel on airplanes to once a year, etc.

If you're doing all that why is so hard to do dishes?

The whataboutism (from pp, don't know if it's you) is irrelevant. Many people do think about these things too, so I'm not sure why it's a bad thing to point out that disposable plates, utensils, cups, and napkins really add up environmentally.
