This. It has been a very tough admit lately.

It's been always tough for OOS kids.

not always. Last 10 years. acceptance rate at UM was above 50% for OOS 20 years ago.

Yeah even lower than that 100 years ago.

U of Mich is not too far away, so it would seem prudent to get kid over to Ann Arbor to take a look around, ASAP, so his like or dislike can be factored into the search. They’ve had a really good football team the last few years, which typically bumps up the number of applications.

Fun fact: Detroit is farther east than Atlanta.

Lol, I know Michigan’s football team had a rough few years, but your comment makes it seem like Michigan football has only suddenly become a thing.

They’re a blue blood program that has pretty much always made the school more attractive for applicants, even during the Brady Hoke or Rich Rod years.

Hard but especially from this area. Better odds if you’re in Tennessee or Kentucky I imagine.

It looks like they accepted 16% of engineering applicants for fall '22 admission. The School of Engineering is 31% female so I wonder if female applicants have a higher admit rate (all other things being more or less equal)?

My high stats kid from a magnet was waitlisted for CS major. I think DS was on the verge of getting off the waitlist but DS decided he wasn't interested. Too cold, per DS.

His stats were incredibly high, but activities were just so so. I thought his essay was good, but I'm his parent. I have no idea how good his recs were.

How could you possibly know this?

In our neighborhood--it seems every other house has a kid there of headed there in the past 3-4 years. And these are students of varied academics--some average test optional and some high gpa/scores.

We have had way more kids get accepted to UMich than UVA or Georgetown. This is my anecdotal evidence from a close-in VA neighborhood.

Umm. No.

Our HS class of 250 had 21 accepted there last year.

I would arrange a visit for your kid in February. If he can hack the cold, worry about getting in. That said, having volunteered for the local U of M alumni club - it's very difficult to get accepted from the DC suburbs (even for "humanities"). They really do look at geographic diversity/high school diversity and first-in-family-to-go-to-college numbers. If you are at a top MoCo high school - your student is likely not in these two groups.

You don’t have to apply directly to CS. Apply to LSA and major in CS. Never apply directly to the college of engineering for CS.

I have a kid there and someone just told me that you now have to declare that under LSA. When I said it wasn't a thing two years ago (because my kid was planning on doing that, but dislike the comp sci classes), they said it's a new policy. So, be sure to check. I can't believe how many comp sci majors there are in both Engineering and LSA!

No longer true. Students entering after fall 2023 now face a restricted major. You must apply to enter CS major. CS majors have first dibs on CS classes.
