DH upgraded to business class on overseas flight, left me in coach

Anonymous
I, a wife, get offered upgrades all the time due to my status with an airline. Sometimes my husband is also upgraded, sometimes not. If he isn’t, I decline the upgrade. The best seat on the plane is the one next to him.

There are so many of these “I upgraded to first class and left my wife and kids in coach, am the a**hole?” threads in Reddit. This is one of the variations.

Not on an international flight it’s not!

This happened to me this summer. I was upgraded, my wife wasn’t. She wouldn’t have wanted me to turn down a couple of thousand dollars worth of seating improvement.

Not very gentlemanly. But in my defense, I am much bigger, and had to drive after we landed…

Well, PP gets to decide what is th best flight for *her*. And you take your wife's feeling into consideration when you decide where to sit. Congrats, unlike OP's fictional husband, you're NTA.

Far fewer people pay for BUSINESS class for their babies, but then, you already knew that.

Uhh, right, because they’re babies, and you don’t need to pay for them. We have absolutely flown with a 1 y/o in lie flat business to and from Europe. The fact that she was practically free and could cosleep with us in the pod was a big benefit.

We asked the gate agent, who just stated it may have been a “systems issue” and that, she could put us both in coach, but couldn’t upgrade us both. DH didn’t think twice about taking the business class seat or offering it to me.

Coach was full of crying babies, loud, and far from the champagne and snacks of my DH’s experience. DH texted me a picture of a plate of cheese.

I think I’m going to let him do the vacation laundry when we get home.

Husband “accidentally” gets upgraded to business class and texts you a picture of cheese plate.

Troll grade C- Get a life.

You are generous with your grade.
The cheese picture was jumping the shark.

But she would have said no because she’s smaller than me (and doesn’t need the extra space in first class) and doesn’t drink (and therefore can’t take advantage of the free drinks). And if I said “let’s sit in coach together,” she would have said no (and meant it) because it’s passing up a good deal and because there’s no reason for both of us to suffer.

This is us. I don’t think OP is a troll. Dh travel for work a lot and has very high status. When we vacation internationally, we often all get upgraded. Sometimes only he does. He’s over six feet, and economy is highly uncomfortable for him. Versus for me, I’ll live in the small seats. He would probably offer me the front seat, and feel quite guilty about it, but in the end he and I would both know where the decision was going. If it was a daytime flight, we’d probably debate splitting halfway through. But night time flight? I would just tell him to eat dinner and take a melatonin and sleep. It’s fine! Someone should enjoy the free seat.

This. Intl Business class these days has proportionately as many babies as economy. Business is mostly people using miles, so they use the miles for those emergency trips where they’re flying with kids.

A lot of trolls in Relationships Forum. Why is that? None are believable.

Exactly this. It happened to my DH and me once. I told him to take the upgrade. He told the flight attendant where I was, and she brought me a glass of champagne during the flight.

The right answer is take the upgrade but sneak the snacks back to coach. If it’s an overnight doesn’t make sense to switch part way.

Oh yes, it certainly is! Sorry you don’t love your wife that much. And she’s obviously happy to spend some time without you.

If you have to ask…yikes.

+1

Goodness. If somebody would rather sit by strangers to get a nicer seat that's fine, but to truly not understand why it doesn't make a difference is just obtuse.
