I keep receiving compliments for one dress but not any other: why?

OP here.

I hadn't realized this before you mentioned it, but yes! It fits perfectly. Better than most of my other clothes, which fit fine, but you know, there's always something a little off somewhere. This fits like a glove at the torso, and the skirt part goes nearly to the ground, but not quite, which is exactly what I want. Also, it's really comfortable, which gives me more confidence.

I so wish I could find some other dresses with that cut!

Hmm. Do you think it would be very expensive to take that dress to a seamstress and ask her to make another with different fabric?

An idea- see if you can get something done overseas. There must be some Etsy or other service you can use where you send your dress to have the pattern copied if you don't travel

I've also used poshmark to look for specific vintage Anthro dresses, especially if you can figure out the original maker might be worth a look.

I agree that the cut and perfect fit of the dress is probably what is garnering the compliments.

If your other dresses don't fit your body perfectly, take them to a seamstress and get the necessary alterations done.

It is also possible that the color suits your skin tone better, but that seems unlikely because the main color is beige.

There is a book titled: Reinvent Yourself With Color Me Beautiful. This book will teach you how to determine with season you are, and the best colors to wear.

You can try, but I’d suggest trying to get fabric content that is as a similar as possible with the dress you like.

Part of why it looks good and fits well probably has to do with the fabric content (many different varieties of knit and woven, with different fiber content (cotton, rayon, poly, spandex).

Look for more things with an Empire waist, they are almost universally flattering.

I actually Googled this because I have a rather “loud” orangey pink dress, and I think it’s something to do with the color.

Is it this?

Wondering because it sounds like an Anthropologie dress I used to own (random photo from ebay because I don't have mine anymore).

I agree with this. I had a boss whose wardrobe was mostly navy/grey/black but she occasionally wore an orange dress that looked fine on her -- not better or worse than anything else she wore. But it was really ORANGE. Different from her usual palette, and very bright. People always complimented her when she wore it, I think because the dress kind of screamed "look at ME!"

I remember noticing that she wore it on days when she had meetings with bigwigs or lunch out. She definitely felt it was her best look, when really it was just her most noticeable look.

Anything to get noticed in the office. Women are too easily ignored.

Women get ignored because men don’t want to be metoo’d.

Well, I had two identical self-knitted sweaters, one cream, one blue. Nothing special, but whenever I wore the blue one, random stranger, both men and women, would compliment me on my sweater. The color brought out my eye color - although everyone only talked about the sweater.

It is always a fit. If the clothes fits you right, then it complements your body. You don't need to recreate this dress, you just need to make sure that all your clothes fit you properly.
