Compare a city in Switzerland to another city in the world.

This, although NZ seems less developed, and does not have the same transportation or tourism infrastructures. Those are the only countries really widely comparable for scenic beauty, although other places certainly have areas which are locally spectacular, including within the U.S., e.g., certain locations in Alaska, Hawaii, and in the Smokey Mountains. Alpine areas in Austria and northern Italy, parts of coastal Norway and the U.K, etc. are all beautiful, albeit in different ways.

I'm the PP who went to Tegernsee. For folks who have been to both Alpine lakes in Germany/Austria and Switzerland, I'm curious if Swiss ones are nicer (and how much nicer), given that it is more expensive. Is it just that food is better? Anything else?

Lake Brienz- nothing seems to compare to this. The wide and spread out mountain scenery, the houses nestled in the green pastures, the water color of the lake, the calmness - I could go on and on. Its breathtakingly beautiful.

Alpine lakes are alpine lakes. The specific views will vary of course, but "nicer" is entirely subjective and is an aesthetic rather than objective judgment.

Switzerland is more expensive; I'm not sure the food is necessarily better there. There are larger cultural and other distinctions as you'd expect, although those differences aren't as great in the alpine regions as they are in more urban environments where cleanliness, crime, bureaucratic efficiency, immigrant communities, etc will be more noticeable.

The food in Switzerland is actually a lot worse than in Austria. I am not sure what gave you the impression that Swiss food would be better.

I don’t think that Swiss lakes are necessarily more expensive than hotels at Tegernsee - nice hotels there would be $500 upwards, same as Switzerland? Likewise, I do t think people who go to the desirable lakes in Germany and Austria will be saving much, if anything.

This.

I studied there in college.

It's beautiful but there's a lot of beautiful places in the world.

And despite it being poor quality it remains some of the most expensive food out there. I paid $6 for a hotdog in Lucerne in 1986 which would be $16.70 in today's money.

Tegernsee is pretty close to a Swiss lake surrounded by little towns. I’m from near there, but I will say that I was still very impressed by the Swiss Alps. They are magnificent.

Agreed with NZ, specifically the South Island. Having spent 15 years in Europe, places like Wanaka reminded me of Interlaken.

No no no.

Canberra looks like DC circa 1975.

Austria, due to it's relatively small size, focuses on organic and small crops in it's food production. That's one of the reasons the food quality is excellent there.

No, the Swiss ones aren't nicer. And the Swiss themselves are definitely not nicer. I'm German but I think the Austrians win that one, especially in Tyrol.
