I have lived (Cheverly) and worked (College Park) for 20+ years. I do almost all my shopping/errands/appoints in PG. I have always felt safe in my neighborhood, even walking home late at night (1AM). I have always felt safe around my job.
There are specific neighborhoods that I am less comfortable in at night but that is likely my bias not reality. |
Just to add that my kid is in a "bad" PGCPS high school and I don't worry about them going to the school at night for events etc. |
| I posted a while ago about how pleasantly surprised I was at the PG Co Mall. Nice clean and lots of security. In comparison my drive back to the Hill was like Mad Max down Bladensburg/NY Ave. PG seems like a good option if you’re looking for a suburban lifestyle. |
I’ve lived in Bethesda and along Route 1 and it’s basically the same. The big differences are: Aesthetics - there are more run down, poorly maintained properties here. Both in the neighborhoods because there’s less professional landscaping and on commercial property. Some retail - there aren’t as many high end clothing options. But I mean, we have a Whole Foods, a Trader Joe’s, a Target and lots of great restaurants. Fewer fancy ones. I almost never have to cross town to shop but I order online anyway. Concentration of low income students in public schools - this is obviously important, and it’s worse in the higher grades. It impacts school environment and course options. And of course average scores. Well-resourced families often navigate the charter and magnet systems to opt out of their neighborhood schools. I’ve honestly never noticed or been affected by differences in crime rates. I think my likelihood of being a victim of a non-property crime in either place is extremely low. I love living here. It means we didn’t have to max out our housing budget, which makes a major difference in our day to day life. |
And that's the main complaint (the bad school system) but I don't see much difference in PG's school system vs DC's school system. DC has SWW, Banneker, JR, DCI, Latin, etc and PG has Academy of Health Science, Roosevelt/Flowers/OH S&T program, IB program, 3D program, Biomed, etc. The students in these programs come out very prepared. There are many so-so schools in both districts however a family that values education and supplements at home will find their way in PG just as in DC. As for safety, look at the data. The stereotype of PG not being safe is laughable. Yes there are areas to avoid, but this is true in many cities/counties. |
| I feel a lot safer living in PG than I did on Capitol Hill. |
Where do you live? I feel like cheap housing is the key to life. |
| You kidding me. When was the last time you were in Oxon hill? |
| Mount Rainier, Hyattsville, Cheverly, University Park are all great options. Schools are average, but not terrible. Private schools in PG are just as good, if not better, than many publics in DC or MOCO. |
I guessed you missed the part where people said avoid certain areas. No one is suggesting you go live in Glassmanor or Forest Creek but there are numerous neighborhoods that are safe and affordable. I would feel totally comfortable most places outside the Beltway and inside the Beltway you have Cheverly, Adelphi, Berwyn Heights, certain parts of Hyattsville, etc. |
| It's because all the crime is heading south, to Charles County. |
Charles is very low compared to MoCo, DC and PG and oh there's this.... https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/06/29/dept-of-data-prince-georges-richest-black-county/ |
One thing I wish we had more of is good, secular private schools. |
| Hi, neighbors! I also live here and feel safe. |
Yes, but if you don’t mind catholic the schools are great |
