I have lived (Cheverly) and worked (College Park) for 20+ years. I do almost all my shopping/errands/appoints in PG. I have always felt safe in my neighborhood, even walking home late at night (1AM). I have always felt safe around my job. There are specific neighborhoods that I am less comfortable in at night but that is likely my bias not reality.
Just to add that my kid is in a "bad" PGCPS high school and I don't worry about them going to the school at night for events etc.
And that's the main complaint (the bad school system) but I don't see much difference in PG's school system vs DC's school system. DC has SWW, Banneker, JR, DCI, Latin, etc and PG has Academy of Health Science, Roosevelt/Flowers/OH S&T program, IB program, 3D program, Biomed, etc. The students in these programs come out very prepared. There are many so-so schools in both districts however a family that values education and supplements at home will find their way in PG just as in DC. As for safety, look at the data. The stereotype of PG not being safe is laughable. Yes there are areas to avoid, but this is true in many cities/counties.
