No it’s just basic physics. A calorie is a unit of energy. If you can’t lose weight with a calorie deficit, it’s because your body is slowing down calorie burn somewhere else — in other words, your math is off and you don’t actually have a deficit.

DP

It’s not that it’s wrong, just that it’s useless, because both halves, but especially Calories Out, are unknowable.

Unless you're continously measuring your exhaled CO2, you don't know your calories out. Caloric reduction can do weird things to the metabolism, which is why CICO is overly simplistic.

Physics is the wrong math for cell biology. It’s like trying to solve calculus using case law.

Permanent weight loss without surgical or medical intervention is mostly a myth.

They key to losing weight and keeping it off, is regular exercise. No, you can't have a completely trashy diet, but you can have one that isn't restrictive and allows you to eat the things you like.

- lost 60 lbs, maintained it for 10 years

And I completely disagree with the above. A famous study showed that exercise is nearly worthless for losing weight (though great for health).

When I run 30 miles a week my weight stays where I want it. When I reduce or stop running my weight goes up.

Disagree. My mom lost over 50 pounds when she was in her late 40s through ww, and has kept it off. She's in her 80s now. She has never exercised a day in her life

Agree, metabolism plays a huge role

This is true. But that leads to another unpopular opinion.

Generally, age alone does not "slow down metabolism." Body composition slows it down, as does lack of movement.

That the key to easy weight maintenance is only eating REAL food. No to artificial sweeteners, low fat products made with xanthan gum, etc. But YES to butter, bacon, whole milk alongside vegetables, lean meat, whole grains.

But there’s no silver bullet that will work for everyone so don’t get stuck in a cycle of thinking you’re “doing it wrong” when something you’re trying don’t have the effect you’ve been told it should.

Agree with you completely (even though that’s not the spirit of this post, lol). And I think the conflicting opinions below support this idea.

pretty sure that's already believed by many - and has, in fact, been discussed here before.
