This. Math in MCPS is almost universally bad. MCPS wants to just pass the kids along to the next level.

If you want your kid to actual learn Math, you will have to look elsewhere.

Where? Seriously, where can I send my kid?

This is online summer school. Sorry YOU signed up for the wrong one and you're blaming MCPS.

DP but can you get a tutor?

This sounds like online summer school, not in-person.

BS. Is that the reason why MCPS has so many AMC, math Olympiads?

You are required to attend all eight classes for online school

In person: RSM or AoPS (+ tutor)
Online: AoPS Online (very challenging), AoPS Academy (very challenging), Thinkwell, Derek Owens, Unlock Math, VideoText
At home books: AoPS geometry (very challenging), tutor in a box geometry, jurgensen geometry, Jacobs geometry

No, the reason is because of a high density of educated parents who value math achievements
+ the second paragraph in the post you quoted. Having a physical AoPS Academy location certainly helps

OP - online summer school isn't virtual academy with live instruction every day. The course are provided using Edmentum software (I think). There is instruction - in the online course. It is designed to be asynchronous. There will be readings and videos embedded and then concept practice (similar to Khan Academy). Of course, kids will skimp on actually doing the readings and videos to learn the material and just do the practice assignments, googling for answers.

The opportunity for live instruction happened during the school year. Summer school courses are designed for kids that failed a course to be able to earn credit by demonstrating some engagement and minimal understanding of the material. If you and/or your student really are invested in learning ... then don't squander the opportunity during the school year.

How do you know all of this? My kid is retaking a class because teacher gave tough tests with material not covered in class with insufficient time. Received 88 and 89 both quarters.

Why is he retaking it with those high grades?

He received a B and clearly knew the material.

You’re making him take 6 weeks of summer school to move him to an A? Eek.

Are you nuts? You made your son retake a class for getting high B's? GET A GRIP.

I know this because I am a teacher, have seen these courses, and know which students are taking them.

And I agree that you are completely bonkers making your kid retake a course where they earned a B in pursuit of an A. There are much better ways your kid could be spending his time this summer, especially if your goal is improving college acceptance chances.
