Yeah this is just snowball from school. I’m a teacher and I was not mentally prepared for time trials and then a first meet while just closing out the school year. I also hated 3 weeks of afternoon practices because we got out a week later. I understand NVSL had their reasons but it stinks.
Also, some people had camps or family events stay the same weeks but then that now makes them unavailable for relay carnival and other things. |
The nerve of people wanting to take a family vacation in the summer ![]() |
The majority did not want All-Stars in August. |
I get that the changing school calendar is an issue. IMO, NVSL should still have time trials the Sat after the last day of school, and the first meet the Sat after that. And whenever the swim season ends, it ends. Even if that’s August. I feel like it’s worse to start during the last week of school than end in the first week August. But no one asked me, LOL. |
NVSL doesn’t schedule time trials. |

Divisional Relays on July 5 would have conflicted with NVSL Dive meets that were moved from the 4th. |
Some of the swim coaches also either work in the school system or the lane coaches are high school kids who play fall sports. Fall sports start in early August and teachers have to report back earlier than students. Moving All Stars to August would give these people one week or no weeks to take a vacation. This schedule does seem rushed and front loaded but I am not sure what the answer is. |
I wonder how it would be affected if the schools went to a modified “year round” calendar with a summer break of 6 weeks or so. |
They have adjusted to the reality that FCPS and APS now start well before Labor Day so that families and coaches want time off before switching into school mode. This was the feedback provided by team reps and coaches when they were scheduling. Teams can hold off on starting evening practices until after Memorial Day, and they can avoid scheduling a B meet before school lets out. That will cut down on some of the stress and overlap. I do agree that NVSL could have kept relay carnival on July 5th, and families that are traveling simply miss the meet just as they would any other meet. |
It would conflict with dive meets. Would that be an issue? |
Likely for a very few number of families. Pools hosting a home dive meet wouldn't volunteer to host relay carnival. Also, while I could be wrong, I'd assume the top swimmers if given the choice between relay carnival or a single Dive A meet would be able to do so. |
Why don't they just pick Thursday for the dive meet? |
The dive schedule was already out with the meet on July 5 before the swim schedule came out. |
Meets would be held on Saturdays during a school week and practices would be in the afternoon I guess.?. |
