Vivian for a girl?

It’s a gorgeous name!

Why does the Asian thing matter, OP?

Great name. Never heard of or met a boy Vivian

It’s not really unisex in America. But there are 3 Vivians in DS’s class this year.

I've never met/heard of a male Vivian.
I've never met/heard of an Asian Vivian

The only association I have with the name Vivian is Julia Robert's character in Pretty Woman.
Are you stressed out that people will assume your daughter is a street prostitute? Of course not!

It’s such an ugly name. It is appropriate for a fat 75 yr old retired teacher whose best friends areIrene and Elaine. Ugly.

Vivian isn't one of my favorites, but it's definitely not an "ugly" name.

The Vivian I know is white.

SSA data shows Vivian as a top-1000 name for males only in 1900 (when data starts) to 1933. It's currently 103 for girls, with more when you consider Vivienne and Viviana.

I don't think either of these are an issue.

Due in a month and had been dead set on Vivian but now feel suddenly panicked... Anyone know any Vivians or could reassure me that I'm overthinking the whole unisex thing? Or else tell me I'd better find something else really quickly!

Yeah, you are really overthinking the unisex thing. As PP said Vivian hasn't been a male name in 100 years.

It happens that I know 4 or 5 little Vivians (ranging from 5-12 years old) and they are all Asian or half Asian, but it wouldn't occur to me that it's an "Asian" name and I wouldn't care anyway. It's not like naming your kid Anisha where if you are not Indian people will raise an eyebrow. I don't think most people would raise an eyebrow at a Vivian of any race or ethnicity.

It's a very pretty name. If you are still on the fence and want something similar, consider Adrienne or Julianne? Their spellings make clear they are the female version, not the male.

I know probably 10 or so young Vivian / Viviennes. It’s a popular name right now! All of the ones I know are girls. It’s really not a boy name in 2023. I don’t really understand the concern about it being an Asian name, but for a reference point, all the young Vivians I know are white, except one who is half Asian half white. It’s a cute name and I wouldn’t let your concerns hold you back.

Vivienne is a much prettier spelling.
