Vivian for a girl?

Anonymous
Struggling to find a name for my daughter - the only one I seem to like is Vivian, but am starting to stress over the fact that a) it's technically a unisex name and I'd prefer to steer away from a potentially ambiguously gendered name, and b) when I Google it, it seems to be used a lot amongst Asians, which isn't really a problem per se but we're white and so I'm completely doubting whether this would be a good fit!

Due in a month and had been dead set on Vivian but now feel suddenly panicked... Anyone know any Vivians or could reassure me that I'm overthinking the whole unisex thing? Or else tell me I'd better find something else really quickly!

I’ve never heard of a boy Vivian.

“isn’t really a problem per se”?

No one will think your Vivian is a boy. Or Asian.

+1. This is definitely a girls name.

There was one in DS's class last year. She was white.

Never heard of a male Vivian. Where is this common? Are you thinking of Marion?

Vivienne please

Normal last minute jitters, but neither of those reasons should dissuade you.

Vivian was a boys name a REALLY long time ago. Like 100 years ago. No one, and I mean no one, is going to hear "Vivian" and think "wait, isn't that a boy's name?" You are totally safe there. It's like Ashley, which also used to be a boys name. No one uses it that way anymore.

And if Asians choose Vivian often, that just means it's very pretty! Asian cultures that choose western names for girls tend to gravitate to very feminine, pretty names -- Vivian, Violet, Grace, etc.

I also think Vivian is having a surge in popularity among all groups, not just Asian Americans.

Vivi is a really cute nn for a little girl, too.

Love Vivian. Simple and elegant. I am not fond of the other spellings, which seems like people just want a twist on a classic name.

I have more than one child who has name that is commonly used for the other gender. No one cares. They may think it's uncommon at first, but they get over it and get to know the child. I've always thought of Vivian as a girl, but even if others do not, it will not matter.

There's one in my daughter's class. White. Nickname Vivi. I like it - classic but not widely used right now. Never would have thought of it being unisex or Asian.

I’ve met an adult Vivian. She’s Asian.

I had no idea Vivian could be a boys name.

While I know Asian and male Vivians I sounds probably assume a Vivian was a white girl unless the last band indicated otherwise.

Absolutely no one still considers Vivian a man’s name. That was generations ago.

Love the name, btw! Go for it.

Becoming too popular for me, but have always considered it a girl name.
