It's appropriate to cancel outdoor activities when the AQI is 180. It's unhealthy for anyone to exercise outdoors today, especially children and anyone with asthma. I kept my kid home today because they were supposed to go on an all-day field trip--would have been nice if DCPS had made this decision a couple hours earlier instead of after the school day started. |
| It's pretty bad here on Capitol Hill. I think staying inside is the right call. |

DCPS announced at 9 am:
Due to air quality concerns, @dcpublicschools has canceled all outdoor activities at our schools today. This includes recess, outdoor Physical Education classes, athletic practices and competitions, and any school-specific events or field trips intended for the outdoors. https://twitter.com/dcpublicschools/status/1666430240917184515 |
I guarantee you that many private schools in the area will be keeping children indoors today, following the guidance of scientists and public health experts. In part because if they don't, the wealthy, connected, and highly educated parents who send their kids there will call them up and tell them to. Get a clue. |
Outdoor field trip? Our school is still doing field trips. Just having kids wear masks walking to and from public transport. (Assuming inside the musuems will be no less safe than inside their schools.) |
I can't tell if this is a joke post, but it's the wildfires in Canada. The smell is forests burning. |
Yes, it was outdoors, and they just cancelled it. |
There are smells in the city that relate to construction, etc., and can be localized. I get that it's fun to be a cow on DCUM, but it doesn't make you seem like a happy person. |
| BASIS is still going forward with their field trip... |
Going outside is the equivalent of smoking 6 cigarettes. But sure, go damage yourself and your children. |
This is a bad idea. |
| My kids' school (DC public charter) sent an email around 9:30am saying that before school today they decided to have indoor PE and recess and that field trips scheduled for today have been adjusted to limit time outdoors. |
You seem sort of weirdly hostile about this, and oddly are taking it personally. I don't know if this is some remnant of covid hysteria, or what. It's 24 hours outside that is like smoking 6 cigs. |
Not PP but a teacher and pretty much every area school division eliminated outdoor activities. While I get that it it isn’t actually like smoking, there are so many kids and staff with health conditions that make this level dangerous. |
| I just played a sport outside for 2 hours. No issues |
