Last year we did not know anything about the choice process for the dcc , and when we ranked the schools we had disregarded transportation issues because we were under the impression that mcps would provide an adequate transportation to and from school . The ranking went : Blair , Einstein , Wheaton , Kennedy , Northwood . The results come around , and my daughter receives her third choice (Wheaton) . She is a freshman now at Wheaton . When we looked at the bus routes the only available stop was 20 minutes away by walk and she has to walk along and across a very busy road . In addition to this , for her to participate in extracurriculars , she takes 3 buses home after school . I am unable to drive her to and from school every day I have a work schedule . We filed an appeal last week stating this and requesting to be transferred to Blair , her first choice , and I’m worried they will reject it and she has to go to Wheaton another year. Do you think it’s likely they will accept our appeal ?

Blair is like 500+ seats over capacity now. It seems unlikely they'll put any new students there. You may want to select a less crowded school.

I keep hearing about how Blair is so overcrowded , if that is the case why do they accept so many freshmen from all over the county to come to their school ? I’ not sure what constitutes as overcrowded when the school’s teacher to student ratio is only 17:1 Only 3 students higher than the county average

Overcrowdedness is about the building's capacity being lower than its enrollment. Blair has a ton of portable classrooms too because of this.

Where can I find information about Blair’s overcapacity

As for Blair, that’s not going to happen.

I’ve heard that Mcps is planning to put Northwood under construction to renovate the school , many kids are also still going to classes in mobile classrooms . I do not want her in that learning environment .

Yes, Northwood students will all be bussed over to Woodward on Old Georgetown Rd for two years, 2024 to 2026.

In Rockville ? That’s even worse than wheaton !!!! Mcps is so inconsiderate.

Yeah, but really MCPS can't win on this issue. Either they bus kids to a holding school far away and people complain about the long rides, or they keep kids on-site during construction and people complain about all the negative effects from the construction (see: Poolesville).

Have you looked at ride on schedules?

From your description, you have no better reason to want a change of school than anyone in the county would. You want your first choice and didn’t get it. You have a closer school but just don’t want it. I don’t think an appeal will work.

You are guaranteed your home school which is not good enough for you. Your DD got another school and you don’t want that due to a 20 minute walk.

It sounds like moving might be your best option.

You should just pick Northwood as it is not that different from Wheaton.
They will be moving to Rockville in one year but they will have bus transportation there. I will be surprised if your daughter gets into Blair.

Einstein and Wheaton are as overcrowded as Blair. The only school with available seats is Kennedy.

To change schools for the following year you should have started the process sooner, in Jan/Feb. I think at this point you may only get your home school, Northwood.

Yes, there is an official process for this, and the deadline was February 10, 2023.

Change of Choice

Students in Grade 9, 10 and 11 who would like to request a different DCC high school for the 2023-2024 school year may submit a Change of Choice request form using the link below.
bit.ly/MCPSchangeDCC

Change of Choice requests are due by February 10, 2023. Notifications will be mailed home in mid-March 2023.

Have you even looked at Blair's bus pick up? Any of the DCC that are not your home school do centralized pick up so you will have the same issue with Blair but you are not guaranteed anything but your home school.

Yeah sure .. there are students who live way farther than us outside the dcc who don’t have to walk as far as my daughter.. Really appreciate your positive attitude and open mindedness to other people’s struggles !!!

Northwood is your best option. I don't honestly see any of these schools as being any easier for you, and like the PP said Blair is way over capacity so that's not happening.

They allocate staffing based on numbers of students. Blair isn’t overcrowded because of the relatively small number of kids in the magnet. It overcrowded because it is the closest high school to Silver Spring and Takoma Park, which are both high density housing. There’s just a lot of kids in the base school catchment for Blair and they are guaranteed placement there.

+1
I would be be shocked if they allowed it. The principal said the next year's incoming freshman class is going to be extra large so it will be even more over capacity next year.
