Dcc transfer

My daughter is new to mcps , she was private schooled from k-8 . Our home school is Northwood HS . Last year we did not know anything about the choice process for the dcc , and when we ranked the schools we had disregarded transportation issues because we were under the impression that mcps would provide an adequate transportation to and from school . The ranking went : Blair , Einstein , Wheaton , Kennedy , Northwood . The results come around , and my daughter receives her third choice (Wheaton) . She is a freshman now at Wheaton . When we looked at the bus routes the only available stop was 20 minutes away by walk and she has to walk along and across a very busy road . In addition to this , for her to participate in extracurriculars , she takes 3 buses home after school . I am unable to drive her to and from school every day I have a work schedule . We filed an appeal last week stating this and requesting to be transferred to Blair , her first choice , and I’m worried they will reject it and she has to go to Wheaton another year. Do you think it’s likely they will accept our appeal ?

Blair is like 500+ seats over capacity now. It seems unlikely they'll put any new students there. You may want to select a less crowded school.

Blair is like 500+ seats over capacity now. It seems unlikely they'll put any new students there. You may want to select a less crowded school.

Einstein and Wheaton are as overcrowded as Blair. The only school with available seats is Kennedy.

To change schools for the following year you should have started the process sooner, in Jan/Feb. I think at this point you may only get your home school, Northwood.

Are you sure there isn't a closer bus stop? I see Wheaton stops all over the areas zoned for Northwood.

I’ve heard that Mcps is planning to put Northwood under construction to renovate the school , many kids are also still going to classes in mobile classrooms . I do not want her in that learning environment .

I keep hearing about how Blair is so overcrowded , if that is the case why do they accept so many freshmen from all over the county to come to their school ? I’ not sure what constitutes as overcrowded when the school’s teacher to student ratio is only 17:1 Only 3 students higher than the county average

Overcrowdedness is about the building's capacity being lower than its enrollment. Blair has a ton of portable classrooms too because of this.

Nope , I even talked to the head of Transportation and she said that she couldn’t offer a different stop and that “a 17 minute walk along a busy road isn’t bad” . It’s ridiculous .

Yes, Northwood students will all be bussed over to Woodward on Old Georgetown Rd for two years, 2024 to 2026.

You can just go to a different stop of your choice.

The next closest stop is 26 minutes away. I’m not making my daughter walk half an hour every day . If there was another stop available I wouldn’t be complaining .
