Where should we take the kids?

If money is a concern, I would go to Turkey.

If you can swing it financially then I’d do a safari in Kenya or elsewhere in east /southern Africa, potentially coupled with another stop in the region, but Greece/Italy/France would be easier to do on a budget (and more easily navigable for less experienced travelers). I wouldn’t do Ghana unless you have a specific family connection that is drawing you.

Agree.

You can do a Greece/Venice trip pretty easily. Or fly into Athens and out of Rome.

Are your kids history buffs? What are their interests?

Op here. What great thoughtful responses! Like all kids, my kids love seeing and learning about new things. Our lives are very routine, so they would love an adventure.

I wouldn’t take my kids on a Safari until they’re a few years older. I’d go south if I were you, to Costa Rica.

If you (and husband) are really only doing this once you should pick the place you most want to go. Your kids can take more trips in the future where they’d like but this is your only one so make it the memory you want. I say this taking into consideration you are not looking at anything inappropriate or unenjoyable for your kids at the ages they are.

OP here. I showed my husband this thread and as a compromise he suggested Egypt. I think we would all love that.

In the summer? Average high temp is 95 fahrenheit in Cairo.

Consider Southeast Asia. Fairly easy flights between several cities that provide huge contrasts (Singapore vs. Bangkok, etc) and easy to add “exotic” nature and beach time also.

For your once in a lifetime trip? Absolutely not.

Anonymous wrote:Next summer our kids will be 13, 13 and 15. We have never gone on an international vacation (other than to visit grandparents in Sweden). This will be our only big international vacation with the kids, as we normally use our vacation money for grandparent visits. We are not DCUM rich, so the budget is an issue.

We want cultural bang for our buck.

My husband says we should go to Greece or Italy and/or France. I would like to go to Africa (like Kenya, Ghana, or Rwanda).

What says DCUM?

Cultural bang for your buck… Africa or Asia. All countries you both mention would make great trips (though I would do Kenya/Tanzania over Ghana for sure, I haven’t been to Rwanda, but I doubt it would beat the potential of K/T). Greece will be cheaper than Italy. Europe is easier/closer than Africa and Asia. Which begs another important question; how much *time* do you have for this trip?
