Next summer our kids will be 13, 13 and 15. We have never gone on an international vacation (other than to visit grandparents in Sweden). This will be our only big international vacation with the kids, as we normally use our vacation money for grandparent visits. We are not DCUM rich, so the budget is an issue.
We want cultural bang for our buck. My husband says we should go to Greece or Italy and/or France. I would like to go to Africa (like Kenya, Ghana, or Rwanda). What says DCUM? |
| If you are really just taking one trip ever with the kids and those are the choices, I'd do Africa because the kids may have opportunities in college to study abroad or otherwise travel to Europe, which is "easy" travel and they have already been to Sweden. So if it's one trip as a family, I'd pick Africa to expose them to something that is different. |
| I’d go to South Africa and Zambia. |
| We're heading to South Africa this summer. There's a direct flight to CPT from Dulles. It's relatively cheap if you buy in advance. As long as you don't book a safari, you can do a very budget friendly South Africa trip. Lodging is cheap and I will be spending less on SA (sans safari) than our family trip to Italy |
| Only trip ever? Africa |
| Op here. I love that so many are voting for Africa. I think that would be an amazing adventure. |
| What do people do in Africa? |

What is your budget?
If you can swing it, I think Rwanda would be amazing. |

You will have a cheaper, safer and easier time in Greece & Italy and you can hop on ferries between them. Start by flying into Athens, visit the ancient ruins, take a ferry out to one of the islands, get another ferry down to Brindisi in the South of Italy and a train up to Rome. Fly home.

Africa is a large continent. There are beaches, museums, plays, concerts, restaurants, ancient artifacts, historic neighborhoods, safaris, outdoor adventures, etc. |
| At that age, I would also let the kids have an input, especially since this seems to be a rare trip. |
| If you want a place that is a real melting pot of culture, but still in Africa, consider Morocco. Our kids loved it. |
| Africa. stop on Rome or Paris or London way home. |
