New car isn't driveable, but can't be fixed

They said that because there were some items under the passenger seat that they some how damaged the airbag sensors when the seat moved. I agree -- we're just trying to figure out the best way forward. Our extended warranty refused to cover it, too, which is why we paid $1,000.

Sounds like you voided the warranty.

Not having the passenger side airbag wouldn’t make a car undriveable to me. Many adults don’t meet the requirement to trigger them anyway because of the size requirements.

This sounds fishy. Why is it your fault? How messy is the car? What did you do? This is not adding up at all. Was it a brand new car? Does not sound like it.

Yes, brand new car. Not messy. Just apparently a few things under the seat. Who/How do we escalate if we decide to pursue that.

Look into lemon law. It may mean taking into the dealer, then telling you they can’t fix it, and then taking it back twice more and demanding they buy it back on the third time

It's not a brand new car if you bought it last year.

The mileage is over the lemon law mileage limit.

Call your local consumer affairs but this is not brand new if you are over the miles.

The lemon law does not apply. This is a fixable issue, just that the part is back ordered. The lemon law does not cover fixable issues where the dealer is not the one delaying the repair.

"Not fully usable" is not a standard. The car drives. It drives safely.

I have two cars that don't have airbags at all -- cause they're old.

You don't have to have an airbag to drive a car.

Lemon law applies if the dealer is unable to fix the issue a set number of times (it varies by state). In Maryland, the manufacturer has 30 after receiving a certified letter. In Virginia, it's a reasonable number of attempts, but if the dealer keeps it they only 30 days to fix the problem.

Wait. Is there no other airbag that could be installed there? Does it have to be that particular backordered part? I know nothing about airbags, but usually several manufacturers make similar parts, and a knowledgeable mechanic (not, obviously, at the dealership) can tell you which other part can be substituted.

I would Tweet my concerns to Nissan Corporate. Companies seem to expedite issues when they are exposed for their wrongdoing!

np. I'm guessing that the airbag is fine. OP destroyed the sensor in the seat, and now the functional airbag will not deploy in a collision because the broken sensor will not confirm to the system that the passenger seat is occupied by a passenger of sufficient weight to warrant the airbag.

OP needs a new sensor, and that is unavailable.

This was a thing a couple years ago, doesn't seem to be the case anymore, much to my disappointment.
