Was I wrong? (parking lot etiquette question)

Or their 4 way flashers to let you know that they were going to do something that required you to wait for them.

In a crowded lot, once you pass a space, it's fair game

The worst is the “pull-through-ers” who don’t know how long their car is and don’t pull through enough, making the space behind them unusable.

And it sounds like this driver made a mistake, which is their problem.

No, we're more skilled drivers, and we can leave a lot quicker when someone is waiting. Life is full of choices.

Exactly. The morons complaining about back-in drivers are usually the ones barreling out in reverse, almost hitting someone.

I once worked somewhere where everyone was required to back in. It's more efficient in an emergency. Also, cops and first responders back in for the same reason.

For the life of me, I don't understand what's hard about backing out of a space. I've been driving for 25+ years, and have never come close to hitting someone. Because I use my eyes, my mirrors, and more recently a rear camera. It's a piece of cake. If you find it dangerous, you must be doing something really really wrong.

Backing into a space is not more dangerous than backing out of one, and the same risks apply. It just takes you longer.

You can back in all you want but if you pass a parking spot, it goes to the car behind you if they can pull in faster than you can back in.

100% this. If you want to back into a spot go to the much less occupied rows and do it. Nobody has time or patience for your silliness that, of course, does not involve letting people know what you are doing.

Same. It was a job mandate. Statistics bear out that more collisions happen backing up than always driving forward. Though, yeah, you have to back into the space. Do you backer-uppers also beep your horns while pulling the maneuver, which is the protocol.

What is the point of saving time for someone waiting later at the expense of the person waiting for you to initially back in. This is just such an unnecessary waste of other people’s time.

If someone really wants your spot when you’re leaving, they can wait for you to back out. The waiting is to their benefit.

Waiting for someone else to back into a spot is just annoying, and can require others to then back up if they can’t read your mind. Super obnoxious.

I would be very surprised if backing out of a space did not cause more collisions than driving forward from a space. More people are hit by back overs than front overs in parking lots.

I do both. If no one is behind me, I back into a space in one go. If someone is behind me, I go forward. Not coincidentally, I can parallel park on both sides with a few inches to spare on both sides. I have done it in midtown traffic in Manhattan and on the hills of nob hill in San Francisco. I lived for years in uk and Europe where parallel parking on both sides was permitted, so I can also do it in cars with left hand steering wheels.

I’ve noticed that the more skilled drivers back in more often. Beginners and people who are unable to parallel park between cars in one attempt are reluctant to try it. I would bet that the people complaining about backing in are the same people who avoid tight parallel parking. They don’t get how easy it is to back in.

I can easily back into a spot. Have never been able to parallel park.

I never knew that there was such vitriol toward the back into a parking space people.

If they put their car in reverse then you were in the wrong.

People who back in part are mentally ill. You are lucky this person didn't want to fight you.
