Every spring, adolescent black bears get kicked to the curb by their moms, and several wander through MoCo looking for a new home. More are seen up-county, but with all the parks - especially the long stream-valley ones like Seneca, Rock Creek, and Sligo - they move mid- and down-county, too.
Much more fun than the raccoons that usually get into my trash! |
| I got the alert at least 5 times yesterday. It was everywhere. |
Of all things to make fun of MCPS about, this is the one you choose? It's a Rockville City Police Department’s Neighborhood Services/Animal Control Division community alert. https://mocoshow.com/blog/community-alert-black-bear-sighting-in-rockville/ Speaking of "Long live stupidity, amplified by social." - tell your child it's a bear. There are bears in Montgomery County every spring. |
| I live in the RM cluster, and I appreciated the email. I didn't know about this until the email. I had read about the sighting in Kensington but not this one. |

Some folks say there ain't no bears in Arkansas
Some folks never seen a bear at all Some folks say that bears go around eating babies raw Some folks got a bear across the hall |
Yes, everyone should be aware of this. Juvenile animals of every species are the ones who are most adventurous and most likely to naively encounter humans. Many are on the move after being kicked out of their family group, they're looking for new territory, and they are still learning to avoid situations. |
| The principal copied that best practices that were already sent around. It's not like she googled it herself. The alert was all over yesterday. Yes, there is a bear in the area. What's wrong with alerting people? |
| I heard that MCPS is considering busing the black bear into one of the W school clusters in order to make the distribution of bears more equitable across the system. Any truth to this? |
LOL! |
Now THESE are the comments I was looking for, DCUMers! Keep 'em coming.
|
Ha!! Sounds about right. |
You can't really expect them to live on the other side of the tracks in Kensington. MCPS plans to roll out the red carpet. They need to live in the best school district after all. How will they get into an Ivy otherwise? |
It started in the 'Poor" area of Kensington. Pay attention to what's going on. |
| People will mock all they want until the bear wrecks their perfect manicured porch or takes a bite out of rover. |
| I was imagining the bear wandering into Marlo furniture to take a nap on the beds like in Goldilocks. Then maybe swing by the Panera for porridge. Poor confused teen bear that is wondering why his mom kicked him out and forced him to live with Rockville pike traffic. |
